Default Head Gasket Results

Ok so Im HOPING I did everything right.

It all went perfectly until I brought a friend over who has experience with engines. Thats when we almost made a few mistakes because I was trusting too much on him and he wasn't familiar with the engine. However I do believe I did everything correctly [wasn't too hard]

Heres one thing that scares me and im afraid to admit..

It took me hours to put the dipstick back in I could NOT figure out where the thing went. I orignally thought it went into the block but me and the friend figured it couldn't have since the hole was, COVERED BY THE GASKET.

After he left I figured that was where it went and cut a little bit out and inserted the gasket.

NOW IM AFRIAD.

I know the head gasket is right side up. And as far as I can tell there is no difference between left and right.

Why did this happen? Has this happened to anyone else?

The truck does drive fine, and has no overheating issues, as of right now.

I hope I didn't F anything up, BUT if I did I have no problem redoing it all over agian..

Please dont call me stupid

Its cooling great, I looked up backwards upside down installed head gaskets [thought I know there right side up] and read to check if the rockers are being oiled. If not the head gasket may be messed up. Im not sure if this applies to the land rover though.

So I either messed up or just a heads up, you may have to cut some to get the dipstick back in.

I can't say for sure one way or another but here is my own opinion, what purpose does the HG serve? well I don't know the answer 100% but I would say it helps to seal the head to the engine to prevent coolant, oil, and pressure from leaking in and out of the cylinders. so my guess would be if it is doing that then you did what you set out to do. now I cannot say that if you made a mistake it may not last as long as you would like it to. I might suggest pressure testing the cylinders and cooling system to double check your work. Look at the bright side, if you did mess up you know how to do it again and you know where you went wrong!!!

and on a side note, did you keep track on your total cost (for parts and specialty tools) and time to complete this job?

total cost was
British Atlantic kit
8mm 12 point socket
12mm 12 point socket
Oil Change
Coolant [2.5 Gal of distilled water and 1 bottle of water wetter]
Gasoline for cleaning
Plastic scraper [didn't buy this, but defiantly should have

I had all the other tools needed and a fan wrench wasn't nessisary. Im not sure what you can get buy with but I had.

1/4 ratchet and 5-13mm short sockets
1/4 driver
3/8 ratchet and 8-18mm long and short sockets
1/2 ratchet and sockets.
Standard sockets [mostly 1/2"]
1/4-3/8 ADAPTER
3/8-1/4 ADAPTER
1/2-3/8 ADAPTER
3/8-1/2 ADAPTER
SWIVLE JOINT WAS NOT NEEDED
Rubber mallet [to separate air intakes]
Standard and Metric Ratchet Wrenches[8-18mm and ?-3/4] [Recomend BOTH sets as things go from metric to standard without warning
metric and standard allen wrenches [nessisary]
channel locks
small pare of plyers [for valve seals]

Dealing with time I believe i spent close to 40 hours, but MOST of this was just in CLEANING. I wanted everything spotless. I cleaned everything stupid extreme. If it wasn't for cleaning and knowing what I know now I believe I can do it in 15-20 hours.

One quick question, do you need new bolts?
