Default Help! One last time plz lol... 1996 Disco Spark on one bank issue I have error codes

1996 land rover disco1
I have posted about fuel delivery issues 2 times now, and have managed to track the problem for a bit, I now have it very narrowed down...

If I clean the plugs and replace them, I can MAYBE get it to start... IF it starts it runs fine for a few minutes, then I hear one bank completely drop off (no longer hear exhaust from firing on that bank) Oil pressure light comes on, and I am running on 4 cylinders all on one side... I thought fuel delivery on that side was "drowning" my plugs as one side was always wet, and the other always wanted cleaned...

I got error codes p1316 and p1314

When I googled them, I found an answer that contained this in a forum thread

Error code 1316- Definition: Spark plug voltage detection circuit fault- left bank (2)
Probable causes:
1- poor connection at spark plug voltage detection module
2- open or short circut between VDM and ECM

This sounds like the exact problem I am having, one bank is shorting and stopping / missing badly or getting too weak voltage the whole time until it floods. I CANNOT find in the RAVE a part or part location for a "spark plug voltage detection module" anywhere... Is this a bulls*** error code report, as I have seen emission excess or something similar associated with said code in my searching as well... If not, where is this module so I can at least inspect it for damage and feel as tho I tried before I push my Disco off a cliff lol

Nope, the definitions are as follows per the GEMS manual.

1314 - Catalyst Damage Bank B Misfire Fault

1316 - Excess Emissions Misfire Fault

There is no voltage detection module, sheesh.

You cannot split four coils into eight. These four coils fire only four times per rev, eight cylinders though you say. Two leads per coil = Wasted Spark - each coil fires once = the compression stroke of one cylinder while firing on the exhaust stroke of opposing coil cylinder at the same time. If you look at how your coil terminals are numbered they're even/odd per coil. Check the main coil connector to the coils, make sure it's not bunged up. It's right near your FPR...... I still think you have a fuel delivery problem......but I'm not there to see it with my eyes so who knows. Read the Rave a little more in depth too, you'll get it eventually.

Have you tried swapping a whole used set of coils to see if its the coils? Or take them off and switch them around see if it helps or if the problem moves cylinders

It had nothing to do with me cleaning the plugs... That was just a coincidence, I am getting no / intermittent spark and my injectors flooding / starving my truck randomly... I have pulled out the camshaft position sensor, is there an easy way to test it before I just buy a new one? I was told a magnet and Multimeter can be used, but I don't know how accurate that would be

Rub my nose in it some more *****? lol... Until I confirm that the CKP is or is not the problem, I only have one last question, are these things really worth the headache, or should I just sell it and run away when I finally get it running lmao?

Throwing new parts at a problem rarely works unless you understand the "why". In the case of the Crank Sensor it's usually one of three problems.

1. The wiring from the ECM to the CkPS connector and not the sensor itself. Wire and insulation become brittle due to exhaust temps off manifold/down-pipe.

2. The sensor itself is looking for a flywheel mounted ring with a tooth gap. The only time I've seen an issue there is when more than one tooth is missing or bent.

3. Sensors either work or they don't which is the normal protocol.

Yes, these trucks are worth keeping. New to Rover owners usually take awhile to learn what's what but eventually get the bugs worked out and they then are both easy and reliable.

Simply put - fuel delivery is handled by the cam sensor, ignition by the crank sensor.

I would listen to Tom's suggestions...... seem to be jumping way over the moon before trying the simple things.

Not trying to OVERfix it, it just seemed more positive to rule out if I changed it, I have already dumped quite a lot of money into this project, and I am this last resort from trailering it to a Land Rover dealer and paying them to tell me what is wrong with it... I didn't pull the CkPs yet had other issues I had to deal with, new one arrives at the part store to pick up in the morning, I followed the wire harness it seemed to 'Y' into a wire guard with other stuff, will finish following it tomorrow and checking for damaged wires, either way, the part store is guaranteed to have one in stock IF i need it now

Over-fixing, what does that mean? You can't fix what already works. You haven't over-fixed anything other than your relationship with a parts palace.

If I bought my girlfriend jewelry every time she became upset I'd go broke, become disappointed with the results and I'd be training her behavior. Instead we talk it out to gain a better understanding of one another. What do you think is going on here? I don't even get dinner at the golden arches out of this......

You take it to a dealer to "fix" it you'll then be able to say you "dumped a lot of money into this project" and it will have a much deeper meaning than your aware of. Be my guest, I enjoy feedback from real mechanics.

You might want to call ahead to see if they'll even take your truck in, most don't. Can you imagine what your truck will look like next to vehicles that cost six figures? LOL........ Like something dragged out of the weeds sitting next to a new Bentley.

Lol, I guess I meant even if it IS just a bad wire, I'd rather have the part available to pick up than 3 days away, so I ordered it, and if I don't need it they'll charge me a restocking fee or whatever out of the money I gave them, but at least I'll have it readily handy... And I don't need Land Rover to fix it, I just need them to diagnose it, I coded it, but have been told there are manufacturer codes that land rover specialists can find that a universal tester will not, not sure if this is accurate information or not, but yea I planned to call ahead to inquire as opposed to just pulling up in their lot with my rig on a trailer lol... And I'll have you know, that aside from not running, my Disco is rust free and clean less some cracking in the leather seats from aging, I'd proudly park it next to a 6 figure Rover, well, er, push it up next to a 6 figure Rover lolol
