If your seals and distance pieces are good, then you can use oil or grease, whatever suits your fancy.
Land Rover went to grease in the late Series III's, but no change in the design.

As for fitting the RTC3511:

Place Seal on hub:

Use front drive flange to recess the seal in the hub bore:

Recess 4mm (make sure it's even all the way around)
The light blue stuff you see is Hylomar I use on the OD of the seal.

I think I see my problem. I did not counter sink the seal 4mm..time to invest in a seal driver kit.

You can use an old hub bearing race, if you don't have an extra front hub flange.
The RTC3511 is recessed 4mm. If I recall correctly the stock seal is fit flush.

Hmmm..........

When I repacked mine, I had purchased new ones, just in case, but the current ones were in really good condition, so I cleaned and repackedthem. I could not find a brass drift or hammer anywhere. Even though the RAVE said to drive out the inner race, I opted to clean and leave it in place. Could not see pounding it out just to pound it back in again. I used the stock seals (fit flush). I was anaware of the Defender seals at that time. May try them next time. Tom, where do you get those at?

Dude, that's genius, never would have occurred to me. I got a coffee can full of old seals in the basement for such emergencies.

Thanks for posting here, you are the highlight of the forum, keep it coming

The only time you need to drive out the race is if you're replacing the bearing. Never fit a new bearing (cone) with an old race (cup).

You can use a steel bearing punch to drive out the old one when you're replacing it since it doesn't matter if you bugger it up.
For installing the new one I took an old race and put it to a bench grinder to take a little off the OD. Then use a brass punch to get the new one installed. Once it's below the face of the bore then set the old one on top and use a steel punch to fully seat it.
The reason being that there's not a lot of width to get a purchase on it and it can tear up your brass to drive it fully home.
If you have a welder you can weld a piece of steel across the old race so you can hit it in the center.

The RTC3511 seals most Rover parts vendors have, just need to ask for them by PN.

Thanks so much Tom. I appreciate all your tips.

One more question: Is the inner race purchased as a separate part, it does not come with a set of bearings does it?

Some folks sell kits that include them, but then you end up paying 2-3 times what you can get bearings for locally, plus you get the crappy stock Disco hub seal.

Agreed, but he is talking about the bearing race, I think, not the seal. The bearing set includes both the bearing and bearing race.
