Default little fun with my D1

hillfail.3gp - YouTube

hill-win.3gp - YouTube

my brothers 99 dodge ram on 35's with a rear limited slip was able to tackle neither hill. However in the wet and muddy sections of trail I had to momentum my way through where he would barely slip a tire.

Try locking the CDL and get a little more momentum before it starts to spin. A Discovery should have no problem with either one of those hills.

It was in low range and locked on the hill I didn't make it up the size and spacing of the ruts made it pretty much impossible to get three tires firmly on the ground. The other approach wasn't much of an issue at all, both videos are of hills greater then 45 degrees

More momentum I bet you could have made the first one - ride the brakes and the tires you have on the ground will continue to spin longer. it's the poor man locker method...

Some mud tires and you would have made it thru the mud. Otherwise you're just gonna slip and slide..

Another good way is to avoid riding in ruts someone else has made loose. If you pick your path to avoid those ruts and use your clearance, you can often ease right along. When it is spinning freely, avoid the temptation to floor it and hold it. Work it like it was meant to be worked and it will amaze you. Either that or "Drive it like you Stole IT." Stomp it and GO.

Yea if it were me I'd be at about 15 MPH before reaching the hill lol

bigger mud tires and a 2-3" lift on a disco will blow your mind. You wont have to worry about ruts unless somebody with 40" has been digging it out

Don't know why I didn't think of hitting the brakes, that's a good idea forgot about that one. Two reasons I was hesitant with speed and drastically changing my line.
1. the hill was not much wider then my truck at the top and the side to my right was the side I climbed in my success video ie steep!
2. my front diff had much metal in gear oil and has a good half a rotation of freeplay, when I backed off the first time it was because I was getting some serious wheelhop and was shocked I didn't break it lol
I have a used third member in good working order on standby, I haven't changed it yet mostly because I lack funds to pay for anything else that may be wrong while I'm there (wheel bearings, u-joints etc...) It's not my main vehicle so I'm not deathly afraid of breaking it but hate having a non operational vehicle in my driveway.

so moving on, I'm in FL so that hill in the vid is probably the steepest thing within 100 miles of me, what we do have is lot's of mud and sand. I was going to do a 2 inch lift and any trimming neccesary for 265/75, I was looking at the guard dogs (treadwright) but I'm open to ideas for my first mod. I thought the vid's would be a nice break from all the omg my truck is broke! that being said, this forum is awesome. I can't tell you how much money it's saved me thus far, thanks guys.

Funny how hills don’t look nearly as steep on video. One time we spent all day getting some killer dirtbike footage but it didn’t look nearly as impressive as it did in person. lol

I wouldn't push your diff too hard cause when that thing goes its likely gonna send some metal through your axle housing, which you will have to have welded up.
