Default Moving cruise control module

Just wanted to throw out an FYI for anybody new to dealing with the cruise control module that is mounted in that fun awkward area behind the drivers side headlight. It is simply mounted in there by three rubber mounts which are just seated in three holes. Just unplug the wiring harness and the vaccum line and then reach in and hook those rubber "bolts" and pull sideways. That will pull right out then you can pull the whole unit up through the large hole near it and remount it wherever you would like. I simply drilled two holes in the metal plate above it and remounted it using two bolts with lock washers. This will make it much easier to access in the future should you need to. Also it will allow you to easily check the vacuum hoses should your cruise stop working. I did all this today while my radiator was out but it can easily be done without removing the radiator. I did need to remove the airfilter box and power steering pump reservoir (just from it's mount not completely removed) to give adequate working room. Time for entire job from removal to complete install was 20 minutes. Sorry no pics but no camera. Thought this might help some as I have seen questions regarding this in the past.

Damn and I thought i had a secret mod on my hands! I did that about two months ago because I couldn't figure out why the heck it was down in that hole. I've been chasing my cruise problem for about 3 months now with no luck. Replaced the ECU a few days ago but it didn't help. I think it might be one of my cut-out switches on the brake/clutch. Those switches and the main switch are the last things to change then I'm completely out of ideas. It hasn't worked since the dealer had testbook hooked up to fix a starting problem. Hmmmmm.....

not that it matters but I don't believe that is referred to as the "cruise control module", that is the cruise control vacuum pump, the CC module or CC ECU is behind the glove box.

and to jbriggs, when trouble shooting the CC system an easy way to determine if the problem is in the pedal valves, just plug the vacuum lines with your finger and see if the system works, if you have 2 (I am guessing there are 2 on a standard) then try them 1 at a time and that will tell you which one is bad if that's the problem. if not I can help you test all the components at the ECU plug with a meter.

keep in mind that there is a vacuum switch on the pedal that also has an electronic switch, and the regular brake light switch is a double pole. Both switches send a signal to the CC ECU. Your brake lights can work, but the CC not..

How exactly does my CC work? The skateboard button works, it lights up, but when I am trying to use CC I hit SET and it doesn't work. I also tried holding it with the same results. Is this a common problem? And is it an easy fix? (vacuum lines I heard? 0.0 )

basically it works like this, there is a cruise ECU that ties into everything, it has a few inputs and 1 output. it takes signals from the power button, the steering wheel switches, the brake pedal (powered switch) (and the clutch if 5 speed), speed sense, and the tach. I am just trying to remember on those but I think that's right (maybe a couple others like neutral safety switch, etc.). anyways it uses all of those inputs and provides a computer controlled signal out to a vacuum pump which in turn pulls a vacuum solenoid/diaphragm at the throttle cable on top of the engine. when you hit the brakes it turns off the pump, and as a secondary measure there is a mechanical air valve on the brake pedal that ties into the CC vacuum system and releases the vacuum when the brake is applied thus releasing the solenoid/diaphragm that is pulling the accelerator cable.

when working properly you will turn on the system with the dash switch, then to maintain your current speed you will momentarily PULL the top steering wheel button TOWARD YOU, if you then hold this button the truck will accelerate and maintain the speed at which you release the button. you can release the current speed by pulling the bottom button however this will not stop the CC it will just decrease your speed, the system will maintain the speed at which you release the button. to stop the CC system you can press the brake pedal or the CC power button. if after pressing the brake pedal you can resume your last set speed by pulling the bottom button or you can automatically accelerate to your desired speed by holding the top button.

and just to reinstate it for newcomers, the buttons only come back toward you, pushing them forward does nothing but damage them

most common problem on the CC system in our trucks is a vacuum leak on one of the hoses. there is a great write up on the system that utilizes a series of tests to determine where the problem is.

Thanks Chris. I ran out to the parking lot during break and found the switch on the brake dis-lodged from the holder. It popped right back into place. I'll check it on my trip to go ride snowmachines today and report back.

i just did this today, replaced all the hoses, but for the life of me cant remember which nipple the hose goes on at the vacuum pump. the white one or the black one?

any help?
