got an email back from the folks at mean green... for archive purposes, the part number of the land rover fitment alternator is MG1372
200A, $399

not sure yet which way im gonna go... but ill update with photos/surprises when i get there

 

ended up going with a rebuilt P38 alternator from a local shop. ~$240 with a test sheet showing 133amp max output on that particular unit. the bearings on my old one were completely wasted...

did the belt and tensioner bearing 6203-2RSJ (SKF part #) while i was in there, that bearing is a bitch to pull out, ended up notching the pulley a hair so i could get behind the snap ring to pop it out.

finally nice and quite - but now i can really hear the lifter tick haha so maybe ill get annoyed enough at that to put in a new cam and lifters sooner or later...
so it goes...

 

That snap ring is a real PITA to get out. I tried for a while after i'd picked up a replacement bearing but ended up saying eff it and got a complete steel tensioner roller with bearing from autozone for 20 bucks..

 

yeah, i struggled with it for 20 minutes or so then did a search and saw the defender guys were notching them - will make it easier to service next time as well. i should have clarified my easier post too, the bearing takes all of 5 seconds to remove/install, the damn snap ring is just about impossible though haha

just put a notch or drill a sideways hole into the part of the pulley that isnt currently occupied by the snap ring. if the notch is deep enough itll allow you to get behind the snap ring and just bang it out with a screw driver.



not my pulley but basically what it ended up looking like - notch right in the middle of one of the ribs. easy enough!

And no more offers of a $1200 to 2500 leather custom interiors for us uncouth blowharders.

 

yup, wish i had seen that before i started. the whole job would have taken a whopping 10 minutes hah

 

valve..with so many of us needing solutions for that lifter problem, maybe we could get a spec and/or deal from a supplier.

 

unfortunately i think the best bet is just gonna be a complete cam/lifter/rocker replacement.
we'll see....

im planning on at least doing the cam and lifters sometime this summer when theres a weekend or two i dont need the truck. cams are so cheap for these it doesnt make sense to run with soft stock junk.
there are also some tempting conversion options for roller rockers and whatnot from the buicks... fix it right once and for all...
