Newbie and '90 Disco 1 key/lock question...
Hi all, first a quick introduction. I'm Dan, myself, partner Emma & family live in NW England & our passion for cars is quite ridiculous...
We're normally big into French cars & have numerous Peugeot 206s and 306s but our eldest lad is also interested in Landies. Myself too, although I've not really done much with them for years. Had a Series IIA 88" for a short time in the late '90s and the last LR I owned was a real "bitsa" Range Rover back around 2008 (It was a 1992-ish chassis with a 3.9EFi engine running on LPG, with the obligatory Lucas flapper blown to pieces. It had a viscous centre coupling and the body was mostly a 4 door from some time in the '80s. It was rough but loved driving it.)
Anyway, now we've just purchased an early Disco. TDi (Registered 1st Jan 1990, build date 25 October '89, chassis # 06632) which has sat for about 16 years in which time the keys have been lost.
So far I've got the physical key code (7174) from LR which was nice of them, and I have an RV8P key blank which I was hoping to hand-file myself as I enjoy doing stuff like that myself. Unfortunately I don't know how I'd find out the bitting of the lock from the key code in order to do this. I could obviously just ask a locksmith to cut a key to the code but where's the fun in that? Although may have to do that to get the thing home as I don't much fancy having to get it on a trailer with the steering locked & don't want to brute-force the thing either.
Anyhow that's about all for now, will update on the project and try to get some photos uploaded when it's home. She's got some rust, I'll just say that! lol
EDIT- brill, one of the locksmithing forums has come up trumps with the bitting so it's time to go get sore hands filing now haha!

Certainly is, only pic I've got to hand is a blurry one from earlier when we went to check the key worked (it does, and the engine runs after a fashion although will be getting fresh oil before it runs further).
Note the jaunty angle of the driver's door in the pic, top hinge is completely detached although it looks like the door shell itself not the body so that's good. There is a significant amount of rust though but will know more when we get a chance to get under it properly. will try and get more pics tomorrow if we get a chance to play on it at all.
