Spike, you of all people know I'm lazy , can't/won't post pics, can't type .(maybe you know I'm cheap, too.)

But only for you guys - Some time ago, I took the advice of someone & flushed my motor w/atf. - I knew better, but what the hell. (I tore down my first car engine in 1959 w/my dad, I was 11)

My motor developed a "death rattle" on start, hard to describe, not rod bearings, but it got quieter over the next few mos.

Bugged me since, but amazingly, this thing runs great & I get over 20mpg on trips.

OK, enough lead-in

129k - no major repairs by PO, like oil changes, etc.

I've replaced timing chain, pulled/cleaned pan, rockers(pass side shaft upside down),
tuned it up 60k ago, new injectors.

I thought I should do rod bearings (figured a couple of hrs.)

I bought allmake std. from Trevor@rovahfarm for $39+ship($6?)
I figured I'd mike the crank on disassembly chancing that standard would work.(it did)

Crank journals looked surprisingly good & came in @ 2.1855" (in specs)
Old bearings not scratched but showing alot of copper were .002 thinner than new.

cold idle old= 30# --- new= 40# Hot idle old 18-20# ---- new 30#
cold 2500 old= 40# --- new= 40# hot 2500 old= 30-32#---new 40#

It's 80deg today in chicago, last winter I got up to 50# cold with 10/40 (after flipping rocker shaft over) I use 15/40 Rotella in summer)

I jacked it up, jackstands under frame, dropped axle back down, pulled pan and had my way with it.

It took around 4hrs, but I goofed around with my tool air compressor and made my wife look at stuf to see what a man I am.

I'm fairly happy, main brgs are next (near future)

luck,greg

thanks for the oil pressure #'s and the time line. I expect to be doing the same thing soon.....this all is coming about because I have a frt cover gasket leak and one thing leads to another as you know.

p.s......I will try to remember to impress my wife by having her watch while I play with my tool ( LOL )

I jacked it up, jackstands under frame, dropped axle back down, pulled pan and had my way with it.

Greg, When you say you dropped the axle back down, exactly how did you accomplish that?

GREAT WORK, ESPECIALLY IF YOU GETTING 20 MPG WITH IT.

I just meant I jacked from under the axle, jackstand the frame under driver's door, pulled the jack out.

Even sitting on the tires, with the frame up, there's tons of room above the axle.

(pull the parking brake, or chock the wheels)

I use my air rachet, makes pulling a million bolts easy.

(don't forget to clean oil pickup and pan, coffee can of gas works great)

Oh, and the 20+ mpg is 2yrs in a row, 65mph (Gps) on cruise to central Minn.

I honestly got 19 with my RR, same trip same tactic.

Everyone passes you, but they do it about 4 times.

luck,greg

We do the EXACT same thing, set the cruise at 65 and enjoy the ride.
Its funny to watch the same Tahoe pass you 2-3 times because they keep having to stop for gas because they are driving 80mph.
We got 24mpg on our trip to Cleveland 2 years ago.
On my trip to TX we got 15, but that is with a SD roof rack and a fully loaded truck with 2 grown married (fat) men and enough camping gear to not look like we were together.

So when I respond to the next thread I read about the cheapest way to put a 572 crate motor into a DI, I'll have to hurry, cuz' you can probably type faster(hell, everyone can, even my dog)

If you ever pass me on the road, we can have a slow contest.
