Default oil smells like gas

so i did a search and came up with nothing. 96 disco 163000 i checked my oil today and i smelled the dipstick just to make sure it didnt smell like burnt oil and it didnt it smelt like gas. im not throwing any codes. it dose run rich at cold start but goes away after a couple of minutes of running. i always run premium gas. last oil change was 1000 miles ago and i used rotella from waly mart. any advice about why the oil smells like that. thanks for any input.

I cannot say I've ever smelled the dipstick to check for burnt oil. "burning oil" means the engine is consuming it, not that it is warming it up.... if your oil is getting too hot, I'd think you have something major wrong going on.

leaky injectors would cause fuel to get into the oil. Is it slow to start?

Also, anything that is causing it to run rich MIGHT do that.... plugs, o2 sensors, maf, coolant temp, etc.

Warn piston rings are the prime target for fuel in oil. Try a burn test. Use a small jar, put some of your oil in it and throw in a match. Even if the injectors were leaking the piston rings would keep the fuel to the top until combustion. Do a compression test on each cylinder, find out if all or just one or two are warn out.

No one who owns a Disco should have problems with a little fire. NOTE: Pull the dipstick from the tube and allow the oil/fuel solution to drain into a jar. Be very careful when you toss the match in. A flame could possibly ignite the oil/fuel solution. Have a bucket of water available. If you have a fire extinguisher have that available as well. Toss the match in the jar at least 50 feet away from any flamable object or building. Do not stand into the wind when tossing the match into the jar. Wear safety glasses and a full body fire retardent suit. God be with you.

slow start? it dosnt start right up it takes a couple cranks to start

i tryed the burn test and nothing the match went out as soon as it hit the oil. i did not wear safty glass or fire prof clothing and i was only 5 feet from the garage but i did have a fire extinguisher and no wind. i would not recomend doing it this way as it was not safe so close to the house

i google compression test and i found out a leak test will tell u more so im going to do that hopfully this weekend

thanks for all the info u guys

No fire, No fuel. Thats a start. The compression check will let you know if the head gaskets are bad or compression rings are warn. Have you checked your coolant for oil?
