oil smells like gas

there dosnt appear to be any oil in the coolant. i looked in the over flow tank is there a better way to check

I think you'd be shopping for a new engine if there was oil in the coolant reservoir

Other way around, check the oil for coolant....your oil will be brown and milky.

I love it, with all the replies, no body even hit close to the issue.
Other then you could probably use a tune up, Rover engines burn rich and as such the oil smells like gas, it is not rings, head gaskets or the need for a new engine.
So not knowing what you are using for gas and how long it has been since you have done a good tune up along with 8 mm wires, maybe an induction cleaning and a can of 44k and you will be in alot better shape.

my oil is a brown but im not losing coolant. this weekend im going to do a induction cleaning and change plug and wires do a compression test and change oil

Yeah, for some reason I missed that. I'd start with a tune up if needed and another oil change.
