Default One Shot Grease Packs

Guys,

I bought 2 of the grease packs from Trevor at Rovah Farms, its the AllMakes brand. Today I finally got around to cleaning underneath and drained out the Mobil One 75-90 that was left in there for about a year or so. I pumped a little fresh oil thru to sort of help flush wat was in there cause it looked real nasty.

Of course when I first started I made sure the fill plug would loosen, then removed the drain plug. I was a little surprised nothing came out until I removed the fill plug completely then the stuff began to ooze out real slow. I pumped a little more fresh 75-90 thru to help it drain.

I finally put the drain plug back in, started adding the one-shot. The thickness of the one shot makes it a slow process. I removed the bottom drain plug to ensure I did not entrap air and left it out until some new grease started to come out. It was still a slow process to fill that one side. If you put too much pressure on it, it would just plug up the fill and overflow right away.

I tried moving the vehicle a few feet and pulling back up but it still only took a little more. Drove down the street and back, no noises or problems. It still would not accept more grease.

I thought it was one grease pack per swivel (1 per side), but I could barely get maybe half of the pack in the swivel ball.

I read the RAVE and it says the capacity is .75 pint. Do not have the amount that the package has in it, it does not say on the package.

Have any of you guys used this stuff yet and what was your experience like? Any help is sincerely appreciated as are all additional comments, questions, crude jokes or related input.

I have found that if you turn your wheels as far as they go you can put grease in easier.
I use grease, with the wheel turned all the way out I can stick the tip of my grease gun inside the swivel just past the CV joint and pump in as much as I want.
I do 20 pumps per side twice a year.
Same grease that I use on the u-joints.
But it is my understanding that each side takes one packet of the swivel grease, also known as "00" grease.

Also no need to drive the truck, just jack up one side and spin the wheel by hand, the grease will get pulled down in and then you can put in more.

EDIT:You're a idiot.

Thanks Spike, I thought it was one per side also. I now remember reading somewhere on here probably about turning the wheel after reading your response. I appreciate it.

EDIT: Man how could I be so dumb, I guess I may not deserve a Land Rover, oh well, that's just guilt talking.

I had the same experience. Also, when I did mine it was like 18 degrees outside. So I set my grease in front of a space heater (don't worry, it's a wimpy heater) for a few minutes when it would get slow. Also, whenever the grease would gather at the opening and trap the air, I'd just stick my finger in there and break the seal, then continue on. I also found that a somewhat smaller opening on whatever is dispensing the grease helps to keep it off of the walls of the fill plug, and moving on down into the swivel.
As for capacity, if I remember correctly the one-shots are supposed to be 325 mL? That's about 0.7 pints.
But definitely you would need your wheels turned. Otherwise you're just putting grease right onto the swivel ball itself. RAVE fails to mention this.

the one shot tubes are 375 ML which is a little over 12 ounces, so think a bottle of beer. Now if you can find it locally, 00 grease is around $12 - $15 for a quart which is 32 ounces this is enough for both sides and a little extra (just in case) for a great price with no shipping!

just my 2 cents.

PS I officially began advertising my truck this weekend so you guys wont have to tolerate my sarcasm around here much longer

x2 on the 00 grease.
My local tractor store even had 00 grease one-shot style packets. They were a little short on the volume, but I figured since my swivels don't have drains, there was plenty of old gunk left over to make up the difference.

how do you fill them? I do not see anything in the rave manual that says how to fill them. How do I check to see if they have a drain as well. 98 disco 50th anniversary edition so I do not know if mine has it or not.

Take a good light and get down there and look at it. You may have to clean it real good as well, you should clean it real good.

The drain is at the very bottom and is a small bolt head looking thing going in at a 90 degree angle (sticking straight out towartd front of vehicle). The fill plug is a square drive at the top. Make sure you can get the fill plug loose before you drain it.

I'll post pics later on when I get a chance.

It's in the RAVE. That manual takes a little bit of getting used, but it's in there.
All filling really entails is taking out the fill plug and putting in the grease. It's pretty much all covered in this very thread.
I might be wrong, but I don't think yours is going to have a drain plug. Again, the RAVE has a picture showing where they should be. You print out that picture, then go out to your truck and compare. If there is no drain plug where a drain plug should be...then you don't have them.
