It all started a year and a half ago (it's been that long?) when I spotted an enticing '97 Oxford Blue D1 abandoned in the back corner of a used car lot. Grand visions of Camel Trophy adventure ensued, but the brutal reality came swift. Soon the visions had faded and an unending marathon of mechanical challenge and hard learned persistence replaced them.

Yes. and Yes. I'd like this car to be more than just a ride.

Sounds like you found your rig. Here's some more info though:

The 94-95 D1s have a little less power and get 1mpg less than the 96-99 D1s. However, they're more simple to work on due to less electronics and build quality was slightly better. The ABS is best disabled (just pull the fuse) on all years as it malfunctions and causes loss of braking. Otherwise if you're persistent with maintenance then it'll treat you well.

Now go watch Camel Trophy on youtube and your wallet will leap out your back pocket.

$2500 seems fair, i paid about that for my 97 all records since new. did a flush flush after picking it up, and all is well.

i dont understand the mentality on here of picking up the cheapest roach you can find for $400 and then spending another year and $3000 getting it up to snuff.

I too had grand delusions of some kind of offroading in the future with my Disco. However that was all cut short when she contracted the gimme disease and I discovered a nice sized hole behind the clutch pedal. I do not know if it is foolishness or some kind of unconscious attraction that makes me continue to fix the issues that come along with a 220,000 mile beasty. I can say this though, it is an easy vehicle to work on and the amount of fun you can have in a Disco is well worth the ownership of one.

Depends on location as well. I picked up my '98 Disco here in Atlanta in about the same condition for $1700.
