the entire exterior sheet metal on rovers is aluminum, correct?

if so, i've got some ideas

Yes, although I believe the roof is steel.

a simple fridge magnet would tell you what's steel and whats aluminum. Aluminum is a non-ferrous metal therefore it is non-magnetic.

on my D1 it would stick to the edges of the doors though.... they must have a steel frame or something. I just tried it on my D2.... and it sticks to every bit of the side doors. I was hoping I could get a lot of money at the recycler for all of the aluminum, if I ever totaled it. Now I feel short changed.

Only the skins on the DI are aluminum, so the door is made of steel and then "covered" in aluminum.
On the DII for quality reasons they went to all steel doors, steel is easier to stamp then aluminum so there was less waste.
