Replace rear brake rotor
 

I have a '96 Disco I, and have to replace a rear rotor. Anyone know how to get one of these off?

You need to download the RAVE manual.
In short:
-Remove wheel
-remove caliper
-remove axle
-unfold tabs on lock washer
-remove hub nut #1
-remove lock washer
-remove hub nut #2
-pull on rotor and the whole hub and rotor will come off, there's a large thick washer and one wheel bearing that will probably fall out
-on the backside of the rotor remove the 5 bolts holding it to the hub***
Note that if the rotor and hub haven't been separated recently you'll be in for a fight.
-place the rotor/hub rotor side down over a short piece of 4x4. Grab your favorite BFH(big f'n hammer) and beat the rotor, turning it as you go. Eventually it will drop off. The the rotor actually breaks(yes I've had this happen) you'll need to get a chisel or wedge and drive it between the rotor and hub to separate them.
-Use antiseize on this when reassembling
-You'll want to replace hub oil seal, drive flange seal, lock washer, and at least repack the wheel bearings.
-you'll also need a hub nut socket to torque the , you guessed it, hub nuts.

Download the RAVE and get familiar with the process and dedicate 4-6 hrs and lots of rags to doing the rear brakes.

And I thought all the fun stuff was done......

Is the hub nut socket anything special, or can I just use a honkin' big socket?

AND WHAT IS WHEEL HUB NUT SIZE?????

see Wheel Bearing Rebuild Kit - Land Rover kits from Atlantic British for parts items.

52 mm socket, 2 1/16 socket, or good Crescent wrench.

I strongly recommend bypassing the kits and buying the parts individually. That way you can get the better RTC3511 hub seal and get the bearings (Timken SET37, SKF BR37, FAG KIT38 or National A-37) locally for a better price.

Very difficult to beat the prices offered by Trevor at Rovahfarm. You don't really need part numbers if you call him, tell him what you are doing and he will know what you need to do the job. Around here I can't even buy ONE Timken set37 for what Trevor charges for TWO along with the needed seals and such.

X2, Trevor is a good guy. Get the RTC3511 Hub seals. Buy extras of the drive flange gasket and lock washer since they're so cheap. I'd try to find a hub nut socket that accepts a 3/4" or 1/2" drive ratchet so you can use a torque wrench.
