Pop the top of the shift lever off (pulls straight up) and check to see if the clip on the button is intact. From time to time they come off and do not lift the rod in the handle making shifting impossible.
If that doesn't work and the clip is still attached then then check to see if you have working brake lights. If your brake lights are not working then check fuse F1 in the fascia fuse box. Should solve your problem. Quirky isn't it?

I think there is a nut under there yuou may need to tighten, don't remember, but Spike did a thread response a while back about the cable being loose.
Take a small flat blade screw driver a 12 point metric socket set. It may be a 10,12,13?. I would bring circlip tool, don't really know if you need it though. A good pair of needlenose just in case, and maybe a can of PB Blaster or WD40 or similar spray if the cable is stiff.

There is actually a TSB on this problem:

(and I still don't think that nut or clip have anything to do with the cable.... the cable attaches at the bottom of the shifter)

Shift Clip
I have had this occur, and the clip was actually broken. (Ok, I broke it....)
ANYWAY....I replaced it with a "C" clip, snugged the nut back up and everything was back to working like a champ. I would suggest bringing a set of deepwell sockets to snug the bolt up as it is hard to reach, and a good set of small nosed needle nose pliers to hold/manipulate the clip.
