Default SLOW filling engine oil, ugh

I've about had it filling the engine oil in my D1's. Both my '98 and now my '96 take F O R E V E R to fill the engine oil. They take forever because if I pour too fast it spills out the filler neck all over the place.
I use the gallon jugs of Rotella and its a major PITA to hold the jug that long while I dribble it in there.

Has anybody come up with a better way??

I found use a funnel but don't just set the funnel in there hold it up a little bit, air flow

But also someone had cut that shield inside the valve cover a little

I was gonna say buy it by the quart.......

I would imagine if you wanna keep the tray just drill a bunch of small holes through it, like a screen under the filler cap. OR hole saw a matching port for the oil to run through. It's great cuz it's the valve cover under the plenum........ ah, it's only six cap heads. Make it a project....... take pics and then Tom can Sticky it.

I figured that splash plate or whatever it is was significantly slowing down the fill process.
No adverse effects by cutting a hole or anything?

I need to do my valley pan in spring and will most likely look at addressing the oil fill then.

Well, I did a little Google research yesterday. The tray has three purposes. To create a low vacuum condition in the rocker boxes for improved oiling by fogging slung oil. To create efficient crankcase venting and to provide pressure against the valve stem oil seals. The 3.9's used a long filler neck, I wonder if they could be swapped with the one on the 4.0? Not the whole box just the fill tube.

No problem with big jugs of Rotella into my stock '98. Change the oil after the engine is hot from a drive. The used oil will drain faster and better. Have the oil at a warm temperature (70F house not 18F garage) and pour it into a hot metal head and it will flow fast enough.

Had my 96 for 14 yrs. Used a funnel and Gallon jugs, no problem. Same with P38 4.6. Patience, can't just dump it in even in the cold weather you have up there.
