Im looking to by a 95 with 110xxx miles tomorrow. The guy said the speedo is not working and neither is the mileage ticker. I am assuming that these are connected, what is the cause of this and how easy of a fix. Im guessing speed position sensor or some wiring in the rear end etc.

Any help woukld be great and also cost of fix if you have had this problem

I would not buy it unless it is under $1000, and even then I would low ball him.
How long has the speedo not been working?
Does this truck really have 200,000 miles on it? You have no way of knowing, it could have stopped working yesterday, but how do you know? Is this guy a family friend? A relative? Can you trust him to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth?

Yes the odometer runs off of the speedo.
It could be a bad speedo, or a bad VSS.

Rent a OBDII scanner that reads live data, plug it in and drive the truck and see if it reads the road speed, if it does then it is most likely a bad speedo.

 

I am going to test drive it to see if that is the only issue. He said he has paperwork that shows the mileage is not incorrect, we shall see. He had aslo mentioned something about he had disconnected the battery and now all the dash lights are on like ABS, SRS etc and that the dealer told him he needed to bring it in to have the computer reset to clear the lights. ANy truth to this statement?

He is only asking 2400 for it and it will mainly be a small tow mule parts and home improvement getter as well as a trail truck.

Ask him if he recently changed the fluid in the Flux Capacitor...Sounds like a basket case he is trying to pawn off on you.
