Default Steering Shaft

Hi Guys - I dont think ive posted before, anyway, I cant seem to fliter the search down so I thought I might post instead.

So 97 D1..with a sort of D wobble.

Carrying out checks as per the check list posted here..I noticed on the steering shaft where the splines join there is a bolt at the top and bottom end of the shaft at each “spline” join which i guess you tighten up to keep it joint closed..well my bolts dont have nuts on? Should they be like this?

Also if I hold the bottom end of the steering shaft near rhe steering box I can move the shaft prob as much as bike throttle..wheels on the deck and not running...again is this amount of play “normal”

thanks

Lou

I had the lower end of the u-joint come lose and the steering wheel would spin around continuously. I ended up putting a longer bolt in with a lock nut to keep it tight. The bolt is threaded to tighten down in the u-joint, but now I don't trust it.

Also if you spin the steering wheel all the way around a few times, you damage the coupler in the steering column and will get the SRS light, Cruise stops working, and the horn won't work any more until you replace the coupling.
