Default Tire Chains

Guys with winter coming I am looking to purchase a pair of tire chains for primarily backcountry use (getting rover in/out to snow and ice covered dirt roads).

Do you fellas have any brand suggestions and/or good sources to purchase them? Any particular type or brand that has worked or hasn't worked for you?

northerntool.com has the old school chains, atlantic british has the fancy chain/cable ones.

I've always found them to be too much of a pain to use them. I've never tried on the rover, but on equipment/the old work truck, they wouldn't stay on a lot of the time, and cause damage when you throw one. Worst case scenario: when they come off the outside, slip to the inside and tear your brake line off. no fun.

Ya maybe in Michigan where it's flat, but here in Colorado having traction on steep backcountry roads can be the difference between life and death (and everything in between).

OK. Was hoping to get more feedback but it is what it is! The chains offered by Thule have pretty good reviews.

Why does even one think MI is flat? Just because we dont have "mountains" does not mean we are flat.

Well relatively speaking of course. I know your not completely flat. You do have hills and stuff. After all, you do have a peak that rises to a whopping 1,972 ft.

I have to carry chains on my 18 wheeler about 6 months out of the year and get to use them a lot. If your after traction get chains if your after ease of taking them off an on get cables. Ive never had a problem throwing cables off and they dont get all rusted up like chains do but most states that require traction aiding devices wont accept cables so I carry both

Rudd makes the best tire chains on the market and I believe Amazon carries them. Do not buy the cable type or non cleated, they won't help you when you are way off road.

I am in the same boat roverguy. I am planning on doing some winter wheeling and want to buy chains. According to the group of guys I wheel with they all recommend them. Am interested in what you decide on. Pics would help too!

if you guys live out west aren't studded tires legal out there? They were when I lived in MT.

p.s. LongHaul that's no fair to talk about your semi chains. You can probably chain up your truck in 20 minutes blindfolded while smoking a cigar. For the people that do it once a year it's a nightmare.
