Default What's the acceptable max engine temp?

I just made a quick stint up a ski trail in my area and the engine temp went up to 221F (105C, according to my ScangaugeII). Since the ambient temp was just 23C (73F), I find this a bit on the high side, but then again, I'm new to Rovers and used to diesels...

thanks for your input!

Anything over 220*F and I'd be turning off the a/c and slowing down.
230*F is way to hot, 240*F and your lucky, 250*F your buying a new engine 100% guaranteed.

The max it should get is about 210F, which is still pretty hot. All of our other cars only get to about 195F, the rover some how manages to get to 210F and then the electric fans cool it back down to 199F. This is in 102F weather.

If the ambient temp in your area is only 73F and your Disco is hitting 220, you might want to consider investigating further into the cause. These engines do not do well when they start getting a little to warm. As Spike said, 250F and your DONE.

With these engines running so hot is it any wonder they have so many headgasket issues? What's the thermostat temp opem at for a d2, can you get them any colder?

On a DII the t-stat is a 180*F.

On a DI the OEM temp is 195*F.

These trucks dont run hot as long as your cooling system is working correctly.
My truck runs at 198*F on the expressway all day long.
200-205*F in traffic with the a/c on, 215*F after idling with the a/c on for 25 min, this is with no working clutch fan.
My new clutch is on the way.

Thanks for the info. I just added around 1 liter of coolant in the tank... I'm not sure that was enough to justify the high temp, but gotta find where it's leaking now...at least the coolant doesn't look contaminated.

You need to check and replace as necessary, the t/stat, front hub clutch, both of the electrical fans and have your radiator flow tested and or cleaned out.

Thanks Mike. That's also what I can find in rave. Can you suggest how to test the fan clutch? I didn't find a test procedure in the manual but it says that it should be engaged when the car is stopped so I assume that I should have a hard time turning it when the car's been parked for a while.

The electrical fans are part of the A/C system. I didn't check the diagrams but shouldn't they only start with the A/C on?

I'm considering a system flush, although the fluid in the expansion tank is pretty clear.

The car runs at 90-91C in normal driving. I do however get a 1187 error when idling several minutes. So i'm not ruling out an indirect effect of combustion problems.
