Default White Shepherd Warning

I put 1/3 a bottle of white shepherd power steering stop leak and my gear box was still leaking 3 days latter. According to the bottle, add more if the leak does not stop. I added half the bottle total to the ps system and boy was that a mistake. The second I did this, I heard an awful whine from the ps pump. I looked inside the reservoir, and say a thick milky fluid. I immediately turned the vehicle off and drained the crap out with a turkey baster several times. No more whine now. I don't know about this stuff, they should not say add till the leak stops if adding half of the bottle will cause your pump to burn out....Imagine if you added the whole bottle.

That is why I said 1/3 bottle. I had been posting to add no more than that, but the typing got the best of me. Yes, it does thin it out, and you should change your fluid once it stops.

Do you know where exactly it is leaking?

Bottom of gearbox...Can't actually see leak from engine bay as it is dripping on the frame. I drained all the shepherd out and put fresh Valvoline Maxlife ATF(not the one with the stop leak additive). Maybe the shepherd renewed the seal. I will keep you updated.

All stop leaks do is thicken the fluid, so a oil stop leak will just make your motor oil a heavier viscosity.
Seal conditioners are different and they make the seals swell.

I have as well as a number of my friends, used their p/s stop leak with great results, can't say why your may have had a problem other then 1/3 a bottle is the limit and then a 2 plus hour drive afterwards. By the way, di you flush your system first, stop leak works much better on new fluid.
As for the statement on stop leak products making the fluid thick, that is sooooo wrong. None of the current products on the market repair leaks by thickening the fluid but by expanding the seals.

Fluid looks like it is boiling. Lots of bubbles.

Mike. I know the Lucas p/s leak stop is as thick as honey.

Power steering pump is whining now like an sob. I already changed the fluid out since the white shepherd. Before putting the white shepherd, I had just put fresh ATF in. Guess I will need a new pump now or maybe lucas will do the trick. Air is getting into the system somewhere. Could this be from the pump itself or is it the gearbox leak?

Tried to bleed the system. Still have bubbles in the reservoir.

It is thicker the ATF but it is also not to stop external fluid leaks. As the back label say it is to free you internal valves and stop "INTERNAL" seal leaks, not external.

As for the air in the system, just go drive it while doing lots of turns.
