Default 04 D2 TD5 Fuel Guage acting up

friend of mine has an 04 TD5 she had 3/4 tank of fuel the guage suddenly dropped out to nothing and the light came on. The truck continues to drive normally with no problems. Has anyone heard of this happening?

Hey hilltoppersx...no answer for the fuel guage...but I was just curious where in the world did your friend find an 04 TD5? Is she in the states or over the pond? I'm jealous...

So I think the TD5 pumps the same way the petrol versions do. So it comes down to two things either an electrical problem where there is no signal getting to the fuel pump to test against the battery’s normal signal which operates the fuel gauge or the actually float has become disconnected from the rotary potentiometer and is physically causing the gauge to read zero…. I thought there would have been a fuse but the only one I can find is for the fuel pump in general and since the truck is still running I’m eliminating that as the problem…. Am I missing something?

sounds like the float on the sending unit went bad.common problem because they crack and then fill up with fuel and sink to the bottom of the tank causing the guage to read empty.she will have to replace the whole sending unit.Oh and tell her she sucks.....lol i want a td5 sooooo bad!

she just changed her story.. driving me nuts. now she says sometimes it reads empty for a few hours then it will read correctly for a few hours then it will just drop to empty again... sounds less like a float issue... what do you think?
