Check ouot the pics. He has a 2-3" lift and normal tires and he can go everywhere the big Jeeps can.

I like that green one in those pics. I'll have to go 3' with whatever size tire fits it. I'm exited about getting it this weekend. Whats the reason all of you have went with a landrover instead of a jeep? Especially since the Rubicon comes factory with Dana 44 axels, 411 gears, and air lockers, with 285 size tires! I still half to figure out what the axels are and gear ratio.

285s WILL fit with a 3" lift. but you will need a trimmed stock bumper or a aftermarket bumper. 34s can even fit (should require trimming). 35s require trimming where they rub if you flex a lot, most people do.
I read a thread somewhere comparing the disco axles to 44s.. let me find it. May take a few min.

Here it is..
Looks like the axles aren't as strong : / Enjoy the thread

I know some guys who run lockers with stock axles and havn't broken anything, but they are real careful when they wheel. It also depends on the terrain, lockers w/ stock axles on rocks will be a gamble. Lockers w/ stock axles in mud/trail should be Okay.

Jupiter rover, how come you didn't just go with a 4' lift? I guess my 2004 disco S has cdl? I think I'll nevr go bigger with this disco than 285=33's, since the axles just are not strong enuf. I think I want to go 3' w 275 or 4' w 285. If you have had no problem with your 285 and you have 4' of lift exept part body lift, than i'll be ok with 4' of suspinsion and hd springs with 285's. That should be perfect without haveing to upgrade axels. Later if I lock them I'll add 411 gears, but you said I would have to be carefull. See on my jeeps I've had I know about d30 high pinion and you could super 30 them with cromoly shaft ect.. and d35. d44 are a no worry unless your doing hard core rocks, so if your post you sent me is right then discovery axles are right before d44 but better than d30 and d35. So theres got to be a way to beef the disco axles up so that they are stong enuf for 411,s and air lockers. This is going to be a learnig experience with the discobecause Im so used to thinking I need low gears and locked. Thanks

EK, I put an old man emu 3" lift w/ 285, 33 under it. We just had to cut the finders a little bit but besides that its fine.

If you do a True 3" suspension lift (only springs, no body spacers) and plan to actually wheel you need a list of new parts; extended brake lines, extended ABS line, longer shocks, radius arms.. the list can go on depending on how serious you are. I would love to have a 4" lift but it is out of my budget at the moment. 4" lift requires even more work then the 3". You don't really need to lift the discos that much, the rovertym 2" lift nets near 3"..
Check out this site for lift kits and what is needed. http://www.rovertym.com/
I have an OME HD spring set up around 2"s. with a 1.25" body lift. So I didn't need all the extra parts a true 3" spring lift would need. What kind of wheeling do you plan? rocks? mud? trail?
33s with lockers on stock axles will break eventually, well depending on how hard you wheel and what terrain. There are a few people with lockers and 33s who have been fine, Just stay clear of the heavy rock crawling ya know? It sounds like you have a good mind set on 4x4s and wheeling. If you push stock parts too hard on rough terrain, stuff breaks. That is why I said you need to be careful, don't just go flooring it over rocks ect. Something will break, the key is to wheel smart. I'm sure you already knew this.
You can call Bill at GBR, he is the main supplier of HD axles for rovers, he can fill you in on what your stock axles can handle with what kind of lockers; ARBs, detroits, TruTracs, ect. http://www.greatbasinrovers.com/ The site doesn't work very well, just call them.
Since you have a 2004 w/ CDL. I recommend you lift it with a rovertym 2" lift (nets at almost 3) and some OME shocks. 33s will fit under that. 255/85 r16 are a sure fit. 285s May rub a little..
See how you like your disco with the CDL + TC (traction control) It may handle better then you expected.. Also, Discos suspension set up is much different then jeeps. Everything sits up higher which gives you more clearance. and Disco axle housings are off center, where jeeps housings are centered. Where jeeps may need 35s to crawl over something, discos can do the same on 33s.

This is the best comparison pic I have.. I'll take more the next time I wheel with the club. The red disco is on 34" swampers. 4" lift I believe. It is a 2006 wrangler. Keep in mind his rig is closer to the camera then my disco. In the pic the top of the jeep is the same height as the top of my DII with a Roof Rack.
