Default 100,000 mile disco II SE

I am a new Land Rover owner (Range Rover 08) but I am also considering buying a 2001 Disco II SE with 99,000 miles. I am curious if anyone can shed any light on whether this is a good idea or not. I love the Disco and this is a good deal. Anyone think of any reason why I shouldn't buy a high mileage vehicle. I am going to be putting some good mileage on it and maintaining it well and adding some stuff (lights racks, bars etc.) . Input appreciated.

It is not a bad idea, the truck has many miles left in her as long as you stay on top of all the maintance.
What would you be using this for?

morning Mike, I would be using it for work, I drive some pretty long miles, as well as time in Colorado- no major off roading in my sites maybe some mild stuff. I will sit on top of the maintenance, anything jump out at you that I should check out of the gates? I just don't want to get stranded on the road. I plan to buy a code reader so I know what's and I will use any advise you give. With good maint. how many more miles til I need to replace something major?

Things that may need attention if not yet done would be head gasket, usually a 1 time event, rebuilding the front drive shaft, if not yet done to make all u-joints greaseable and my service list, which I will send you when you get ready.
How much are they asking for the D2?

Probably pick it up for about 5-5.5. Is there a ballpark on cost to do everything I need done - not at dealer- I have a good reasonable shop- I will probably do some things myself- I am a fixer and don't mind working on my vehicles. I just wouldn't to head gasket, drive shaft, send me your service when you have a minute and I can review it. I just need to know a rough $$ figure to budget for. Thanks Mike

by the way how crazy is it to replace the engine one day, I want this thing to last, and be overall reliable.

Stay at $5000 or less if you can.
Engine will give you 250,000 plus if taken care of.
I can walk you thru the service, do it yourself and save a bunch as well as learn more about your vehicle real quick, it will take you the best part of a day to do it all.
Forgot to mention, you'll need 02 sensors sooner then later.
Parts on my list will run you in the low$300 range, a shop will charge your an easy $1000 to do it all.

1 Oil filter, K&N 3001 or Mobil 1- 301
1 Factory air filter
6 Qts. of engine oil
2 feet of 3/16th vacuum tube
2 feet of 5/16th vacuum tube
12 Qts. of ATF
7 Qts. of 80/90W synthetic gear oil, 85W/140 for HD use
3 Pints of synthetic DOT 4 Brake fluid
2 Qts of synthetic Power steering fluid
2 Gallons of OAT, orange coolant, also called DexCool
1 Bottle of Lucas Power Steering additive
1 Bottle of Lucas Transmission additive
1 Can of Spray Carb. Spray
1 Can Of Brake cleaner
8 Spark Plugs, I use Bosch Platinum Plus 4's
1 Set of Magnacor 8mm plug wires
1 Serpentine belt
2 Bottles of SeaFoam gas additive
1 T/Stat
1 bottle of WaterWetter or Purple Ice
Hoses and belts, as necessary

60,000 Mile Service or Major Service for High Mileage Used Vehicle just purchased

Bleed the brakes
Flush and change the power steering fluid adding one bottle of additive
Service the tranny adding one bottle of additive
Change the coolant and t/stat
Do an engine flush before changing the oil
Do an induction cleaning
Clean the throttle body
Add fuel additive to full gas tank
Change both of the diffs fluid
Change the t/case oil
Replace the plugs and wires
Replace the air filter
Lube all the drive shaft grease fitting including the 2 slip shafts
Do full inspection of brakes, hoses, bushings etc.

Hopefully I didn't leave anything out.
Hope I haven't scared you away, I would recommend this type of service on any used vehicle with 100,000 miles on it.

thanks mike, when I take the plunge, what is the best or easiest to follow dvd or manual to get to perform all of these. I would like to do them myself to get to know the disco. Also is there a good place to get these items in one shot,

Much appreciated Mike

Hi Mike, any further info on the above post, also is there a year of the disco that you would recommend more than another for reliability?

Hey Mike - what do you think an average cost on the head gasket would be? any ideas will help. A rough price on the drive shaft would be helpful also..

Mike
