Default 135 k Disco 2.. Trans. flush or new fluid ?

Hello all,
I have a 99 disco 2 with 135,000 mi. I do not know what kind of service has been done before I bought the truck. I have some questions about transmission service.

1. Should I have a transmission flush at the shopor pump out the old and pump in new myself?

2. Should I remove the pan and cleen the screen? I asume the 30,000 service was done but don't know for fact, should I buy a new screen ?

3. What brand/type of trans. fluid do rovers like ? should I go with synthetic?

I appriciate your response

Do not flush the engine, you have too many miles on it and could cause problems.
Drain and refill, try using Vavoline's extended Dex.3, 6 quarts, no filter and make sure you recheck the fluid level when done by starting the engine, shifting back and forth between drive and reverse 2 time, leave in park with the engine running and recheck/top off.

Mike,
Thanks very much you do the forum a great service I noticed you have even had folks call you for advise, way to be.
is DEx 3 you recomend the "maxlife dex/merc" listed on their website?
while i've got your attention is changing out the front driveshaft a hard fix on the D2? Any trickery needed, special attention Items, ect..?
I have done it Jeep CJ's and toyota trucks local indy shop charges $90 to install $240 for the shaft. I Would rather work on my own truck but some things are better left to the pros.

I have used the Maxlife in my D1 with no ill effects. Works just fine.

The driveshaft isn't hard to take out and replace, the tricky part is the re-build with the double cardan. If you are having it done, taking it out isn't too difficult. Sounds about right, I got both shafts done for $300, but I only have singles on both shafts.

O'brein's performance auto
1402 E 6th St
Tulsa, OK 74120
(918) 583-7889

is a good indy shop. If the guy in front screws with you, ask to speak to David. Our dealer is great too, so don't rule them out. They know what they are doing.

I had Driveshafts Inc do my shafts, but I pulled them. I think Powertrane by I-44 west of the river will pull them and re-build.

I recently got a place on Grand, so all my time has been spent up there. We have hit a few light trails at Disney. Not sure about anything local. We have a local club : http://www.okoffroad.com/okrovers/

I flushed my engine at 134,000 miles with no problems. Your results may vary.

As for the transmission, I used Valvoline Maxlife dexron ATF and a Filtermag. I also changed the filter. After a few thousand miles I pulled the pan again and cleaned all the metal bits which the magnet picked up. They metal is mostly from clutch wear and other ferrous particles floating around. Seeing is believing. This picture shows what I saw when I pulled the pan to clean it:

For maximum transmission life, change the filter.

Always a risk servicing an auto tranny, the new fliuds contain detergants which "clean" out the box and then candislodge some of the "gunk" in there and it then can flow around and block up the governor.

Lost of people service without issues, but lots also report worse or new issues after a tranny service.
