Default 17 and Just Bought a Disco!

Hi, all today I just bought a 2000 Land Rover Discovery 7 Passenger. I believe we got a good deal on it? 5300 out the door. 112,000 miles. The car has a few cosmetic things that I thought you guys may be able to direct me to where I could find the parts for it. On the rear jump seats the little black lever that you need to fold the seat up, is missing on one of the seats so you cannot fold it up. Where can I get that little black handle? Also I only got one key with it so I would like to get another one. I realize its not going to be cheap no matter what I do but I figured one of you could tell me what the cheaper route will be. Also I put the cd changer thing in under the seat without any discs in it and now I cannot figure out how to get it out? I push the blue button and hear a quick noise but then nothing.

Lastly the car makes a little squeek ..roatation type noise...squeek...rotation... squeek. Slow at idol and then faster when the car is in motion. Not real loud, but enough that you can hear it and its annoying. What should I look at doing to fix that? I put some belt dressing on the main belt under the hood. It seems to be Extremely tight. My grandpa checked it out and said it was really tight to, but since he doesnt know much about land rovers we didnt no if that was normal.

Any advice you guys can give is much appreciated. I love this car so for. Seventeen and got a land rover! Feels like riding on a cloud compared to most cars.

Your best bet for the cosmetic parts is to go to the for sale section of the forums and find someone "parting out" a disco. You will pay less than buying a new piece.

Congrats on your purchase and good luck.

First things first. You need to check that squeak out. You need to check out the front driveshaft. They have a really really bad habit of breaking off at the transfer case due to the double cardon joint failing. When they break off, they have a tendency to break a hole in the side of the transmission. Here is an example of what can happen...

In case you were wondering, ^^^^ That is a gaping hole that was in the side of my transmission from the front driveshaft breaking off at 45mph. Not my doing though...I bought the truck this way. Turns out it's having other issues, but I did buy it as a work in progress.

If the U-Joints on the double cardon joint have any sort of grease fittings on them, then someone already beat you to the punch. If not, your first priority should be to rebuild that driveshaft.

Good luck brother, and welcome to the community. These are some of the most knowledgeable guys I know. Any they're pretty friendly too.

so you think that is most likely causing the squeak?

It's possible, if the driveshaft hasn't been rebuilt yet. As long as you get to it before it breaks loose, it's no big deal at all. Do it as soon as possible, because if it is the driveshaft, the squeaking means it worn pretty badly and is liable to break off and raise some hell.

Then again, if it's not the front driveshaft, then I'm not sure what it could be. Maybe the tensioner pulley?

But one of the very first things you want to do is check that driveshaft. Saves a WHOLE lot of headaches and expensive repairs later.

Like tornado said, your first priority needs to be making sure your front driveshaft is rebuilt with greaseable u-joints. The pictures tornado posted are a great example of why everyone on this site preaches rebuilding the driveshaft. Any drive line shop can do the rebuild for a couple hundred dollars with parts.

Second thing you need to do is go to http://green-oval.com/joomla/index.p...d=13&Itemid=29 and download the RAVE manual for your vehicle. It' the LR repair manual. These are maintenance intensive vehicles and the RAVE manual is a must have.

Third, go through and complete the 60k service that is stickied at the top of the forum. It's important to go through and make sure everything on the truck is current on maintenance. I recommend full synthetic fluids throughout the truck. And only use Magnecor 8mm wires. Most other wires you'll be replacing them again in a month.

Don't let these guys scare you. Some parts can be expensive but other are cheap. You'll just have to shop around. Roverland Parts (www.roverlandparts.com) is a great source of used parts with a guarantee. Atlantic British (www.roverparts.com) is another popular parts supplier but they deal with new parts. Watch AB for sales and you can find some good deals.

I will take some pictures of the drive shaft tonight and post them so you can tell me if it looks okay or not. The breaks are a little mushy, but since I really dont know how the car is supposed to drive I thought they were okay. The dealership said they had just spent 1200 on tune ups on the vehicle including the air ride but they didnt really go in detail about what was done. It really sounds like a belt as it has like a rolling squeak type noise. I will also download that manual and keep it for reference. I dont plan to do any off roadin in the vehicle just, use it as my car to cruise around town in.
