New here, lurking for a day ormore and now after much debate, in my head anyway, i am wading in. I have the opportunity to buy one of 2 Disco's both with 113,000 on the clock. The difference is the 1996 is the SE7 with the jump seats (that I like) and the 1999 the rear sun roof wont open. Other than that...they look identical, even in price 3K. The 1996 is local but the 1999 I will have to travel 3hr to take delivery. I have read a little about the 1999 but need to know if the difference is Worth the drive? Kind of leaning toward the local rig because of the jump seats and zero drive. just don't want to wish later that I had put my butt in the seat to pick up the 1999. The '96 has the 3.9L engine and the '99 has the 4.0. Exact same engine just different stroke.
I believe that the '96 has a cap and rotor, I know that the '99 has electronic ignition.
If it was a '99.5 it would be a Discovery Series II and be totally different.
The broken sunroof is common and usually a pretty cheap/easy fix.
The rear jump seats are not very good and only kids can use them for any lenght of time.
If the '99 is so cheap I would tend to think that something major is wrong.

Is the 99 a Disco I or a Disco II ?
The early 99 are I's and the late 99 are 2's and there are a lot of differences.
The tail lights on the Disco II are higher and are larger.

If they are both Disco I's it will come down to which one is in better shape and what model it is the lower to high is
S,,, SE,,, SE7 both will have a 4.0L v8 in the U.S. one
Disco I is a GEMS motor and the Disco II will be a Bosch motor,its the management system (96 first year 4.0L).

Let us know what is what then we can give better info.

Thanks for the replies. Exactly the information I needed. The Robinson link couldn't be more valuable! The guy (dealer) small time doesn't know anymore between a 1 or 2 than I do. I think after comparing photos that it is a 1.

Don't worry about the rear sum roof. What do you plan to do with one of them?
I would point you towards the 99.

 

Looking at the photo,yeah, its a DI.
The way to tell DI from DII-the DII has electronic HVAC controls and the DI has rotory ****.

 

For the next year anyway DD and light duty wheeling. Honestly I will put more money into the "look" than the "bite" for the time being. I am an old die hard jeep guy...but I am feeling my way here.

 

Rear jump seats would be a SE7 and in the U.S. will have rear AC.

Bore is 94.0cc and the stroke is 71.1cc on both 3.9L motor
and the 4.0L Disco I's and the Disco II's it was a round up thing that Land Rover did so CCare the same 3,947 cc the Disco II gets more Hp by the intake.

1996 was the first year for OBDII and coil packs.

 

Not all SE7's had rear air.
If you get rear seating in a D1, you have little or no room for carrying things.
D2 will offer you many more features
