2000 disco 2 head gasket job
 

doing the head gaskets,got the drivers side heads off.got all the passenger side head bolts out except for the the 2 according to the workshop manual.i have tried using my ratchet,breaker bar, last resort my impact. it seems like i cant get a good grip on the bolt.using only the ratchet or the breaker bar and the socket i cant break it loose.using an extension i cant get a good grip because the firewall is in the way,same with an impact. anybody else had this same problem?
the number 2 bolt is the one closest to the firewall on top

I used a short extension (3 "?) for breaker bar to socket, and a 24" length of "cheater" pipe slipped over the handle of the breaker bar.

thanks buzz,worked for me. got both the heads off,ready to go to the machine shop!i am attaching some pictures so you guys can see what it looks like with the heads off.the reason im doing the heads is because i had a cooling problem,
after replacing the t-stat,the radiator,water pump,overflow cap,electric fan,i started noticing white smoke from the exhaust,figured it was a gasket, now here i am.

Mine out-sludged you by a little. Keep the old valley pan gasket, use it as a template to line everything up (both heads and the valley pan) before you start torque on the heads. Trust me on this, and flip thru my ordeal posting on it.

Looks like valve train will need some cleanup. Not sure if your machine shop will take care of that as well. Mine did the heads and valves and seals for $250. I should have let him plop the valve covers in the hot tank.

Be sure, be dang sure, that any bolt you can start with fingers and keep going for many threads. Cross thread aluminum slows you down, costs more time. I put RTV around the 4 water channels (corner ports) on the valley, some do, some don't.

No, just where it makes sense. Certainly not on the head gaskets. Oh, you were making a funny?

I have also read that some people put the heads on loose then installed the valley gasket w/ lower intake. After this they torqued the heads. removed the lower intake and valley gasket and installed them with the end seals. rtv, etc.

I used hylomar when I did mine.

If you don't get your covers hot tanked when you have your heads done. Super Clean works great to clean them. I used it full strength and it cuts thru the build up very quick.

BTW - I used that method, but first time used too much RTV. Only need to have a thin coating, so thin you can still see the gasket thru it. Amen on wiggling everything around. Folks that read my thread on it get a lesson in what not to do.

And the advice others gave about cleaning bolt holes with a gun barrel cleaning brush is also good.

Yea I I was being funny, ..but being honest a little Lol, also another question, is it necessary to get a new plenum gasket, only 17 dollars..., just wondering tho, and does the victor reinz head gasket kit come with the valley pan?going to do new plugs and wires, anything else I should consider doing while I have it torn down? I guess that's 3questions Lol
