Default 2002 DII SE - decent buy?

Purusing the want ads today, I found a 2002 DII SE with 53,500 miles for under $16,000. It's at a Land Rover/Jaguar dealer, and I'm considering taking a test drive this weekend. Other than the 60K service coming, anything special I should ask the dealer? Can I assume it's been well looked after being at the dealership? The price is a touch over KBB so hoping to negotiate. Thanks --Loyd

The3 going numbers on a 2002 are between $10,000 and $11,000.
What area do you live in?

Thanks Mike. The truck is in Memphis, TN. I'm in Oxford, MS (60 miles south).

In my opinion a good clean low mileage Discovery II is worth every bit of $16,000. Book value means nothing when it comes to these trucks, every Discovery II you look at is going to be different, will vary in condition and have different service historys.Your job is to find the cleanest, best serviced Discovery you possibly can and pay accordingly.

I would not pay anywhere near 16K for the truck no matter how clean it looks. With that milage youwill soon be needing the 60k maintenanceand likely, newbrake pads and rotors. Done by a dealer or indy shop this could easily cost you 2K + alone. I won't even get into other things you could/will endup paying for. Seriously, I would gladly sell you my Cherry, well maintained02 SE for 16K. I will even deliver it to you!! I'monly nine hours away. I love my truck but you need to know that they are a financial liability. Unless the dealeris offering you a meaningfull warranty I see no advantage in buying from them. The price Mike recommendsis much more in line with what I've seen trucks sell for. With gas prices continuing to climb I would bide my time and wait for a much better deal on a newer truck. Good Luck!

Yes, the it would be nice if we were able to sell our trucks for what they are reaqlly worth, but it is foolish to pay way more then market, unless it is a true one of a kind.

Thanks everyone for your input so far.

The 86k are kilometers - it converts to 53k miles.
The price dropped today to $15k
The '02 DIIs under $12k appear to have 80-100k miles. Is the low mileage on this one worth it? And wouldn't the 60k service be an adequate time to get everything back in shape?

Loyd,
My Father always used to say "buy the best you can afford" and "you get what you pay for". Yes, there are plenty of Discovery's to be had for $10,000,but chances are they will need some attention. When I bought my 2001 Discovery in the summer of 2004, it had 17,000 kilometers on the clock, lots of warranty left, never seen snowand I paid $30,000 Canadian for it.Yes,I could have purchased a preowned 2004 HSEwith 80,000 kilometers for the same money, but the warranty was expired(the previous owner drove a lot)I chose the 2001 with the low clicks. My 2001 still has only 36,000 kilometers on it( about 20,000 miles) and I would not even consider an offer less than $16,000. It really doesn't matter anyway because I'll never sell it!....I'll make you a great deal on my Wife and kids though! LOL!

I that truck is in good shape I would offer in the range of $13,000-$14,000 at most. Use the excuse "well, with gas mileage and everything..." or just be straight up. When I was buying my disco I worked it down from $10,000 all the way to $8,000 and got a 2000 disco with 89,000 miles. And it only needed a bit of work done to bring it back into shape.

I am pretty suprised that in TN that truck is more than one here in NC that is very similar. When i was in the market for my last car i found that cars in TN an SC were cheaper, but yet the same quality. I guess it just depends on the town you live in. If you dont get this one look for a disco in Bristol or around the motor mile, they were very cheap around there, and most of them were pretty nice! Good luck!
