Default 2002 Freelander

I know this belongs in the other forum but wanted to get as much feedback from as many rover owner's. I own a 2000 Disco and understand the quirks of the disco's.

There is a 2002 Freelander for sale locally with the 96k on the clock but the only catch is that revers is out. Only goes forward, the used car lot does not know why it doesn't work. Any thoughts.

My first thought is to run - even if they pay you to take it.

Advice recently given to another Disco owner that was considering a Freelander...

I get the picture...but what happened to make these suv's so bad. I mean, my disco has 159k on it and the only issue it has is the left passenger door lock will not engage. So, how could a car company that makes good SUV's; make a bad one. I'm not familiar with the freelander nor why rover thought it a good idea to bring to the market. Any guess.

Just Google "Freelander Coolant in Engine" and you should have years worth of sufficient info. And that's just the biggest problem with the car. Transmissions issues abound. As do about 15 or so other guaranteed issues that come with the Freelander.
Disco owners worrying about slipped liners or oil pump failures have nothing on Freelander owners who know their time will come. Not if, but when - and usually within low mileage.
When it's running, it's a great ride. It does better in some snowy situations than the Disco. And the handling is splendid. It's gotten me places I never thought it would.
I'm basically riding mine out to the bitter end. I've taken all valuables out of the car so when it dies, I will have it towed far away and never look back. It's been fun, sure, but Land Rover pissed a lot of people off by not recalling that horrid engine.

There's a good history in a couple of books about the car. What it meant for LR at the time, the most popular SUV in Europe for a few years, etc... The diesel for instance, is still a good car on the other side of the pond. At least the original Freelander. I don't know about the LR2 here or the Freelander 2 there...

Everything I have read and heard is that they're wonderful little trucks- when they run. It's just a very maintenance-intensive and trouble-prone petrol powerplant. I actually really like the orange G4 Freelander, I hope I never find one for sale for next to nothing because I'd have to fight myself to keep from owning it.

FWIW, I have heard that the LR2 is exponentially better than its predecessor.
