Default 2002 Kalahari. Wont Crank, & other issues.

Hi all, So I recently purchased a 2002 Disco Kalahari edition in excellent shape. It has 140 000 on the clock and is all stock.

The story that came with it was it was owned by a wealthy Lady and then borrowed by a relative and driven in deep water. It never ran since....the wealthy lady gave it to her gardener and he gave it to his brother and I got it from him (or something like that .

So with a battery the dash lights come on. The horn and headlights work. The heating/ac system will come on, but basically everything else is dead. In the crank position nothing, nada. I jumped the relay and it cranks over. I have the iLand device from British pacific, but not really sure what all the data on it means.

Unfortunately the original keys are missing and it just has a set cut from blanks with no fob.

I have a parts disco II that runs and drives but is trashed and has bad head gaskets.....that is my parts car.

Both S (sport) and M (manual) lights are flashing in green on dash. I have tried changing out the starter relay, checked all fuses, and even swapped out the ECU and transmission control unit from the parts car. None of these things made a single bit of difference.

I would appreciate anyone's input..... I am a pretty good mechanic, but

inexperienced with the electrical systems on vehicles of this era (most of my Land Rovers are from the '50's.....)

Thank you in advance!!!!!

You can’t just swap out ECU’s. You have to do the cluster, BCU, and the ECU together. Make absolutely sure battery is good, terminals are clean, and tight. That will cause flashing M & S for sure.

Read all codes & look them up.

Welcome to the forum!
Get a good ODB diagnostic tester like a Nanocom if you plan on keeping it .

Starting with the basics... did you press the inertia reset on the firewall?

Flashing lights means one of 2 things:

Low voltage (replace battery, see if that works, check all ground points and wire harnesses too)
XYZ switch (neutral safety switch) - probably the issue, if it gets wet it can fail and the computer won't know it's not in gear so it won't let it start

If you verify the voltage is good, then you should read the codes with something that can read transmission codes. The switch is not cheap to fix, so you want to make sure that's the issue.

The XYZ switch is extremely cheap to fix (as in, zero cost), if you take it off, disassemble it, and clean it. The OP (presumably) also has access to a spare one from the parts truck.
But yes, confirm the issue by reading transmission codes first.

Ummmm...'deep water' ? have you pulled the spark plugs to look for rust, or changed the engine oil? just some basics.....

Deep water that sounds bad, pull the all the plugs and check for water and rust before you turn it over. If they sucked water through the air filter it could have hydro locked - I would go so far as to drop the pan and look for bits.

Default more info

Thanks for the responses. If possible please keep this thread solely for this vehicle....... (and regular sized sentences).

Yes I have reset the inertia switch on firewall. Battery is good and terminal connectors clean.

The XYZ switch was changed by the previous owner (I am not ruling this out as the problem however). Oil is clean (however it was changed by previous owner, so....?). The engine cranks over when I jump the relay switch with a bridging wire - so the engine is not locked up. Also - the interior is in such good shape I do not think the water was THAT deep..... maybe enough to cover floors however.

Plan to trade out the BCU and possibly under dash fuse module from parts car today and see if that changes anything.

Several 'self proclaimed' mechanics have messed with various things on the car to try and make it work before I got it.....so there may be may be multiple issues caused by them also.

The parts car is also a 2002.

I will post the engine and transmission error codes as read from the ILand device in the next hour or so.
