2003 has the 4.6 engine right?
That one has the thinner casting walls and the possibility of a slipped liner?

Get a carfax if you can.
See if the head gaskets were done.

And take care to mind the drive shafts that they are in good condition.

You've got it backward...

The book "How to Power Tune a Rover V8" says otherwise

"I have heard folks on here mention the 4.0 block is more reliable than the 4.6." That is a myth, or a biased, misinformed opinion not based on fact, though it, in part, depends on what one means by the term "dependable." " How to Power Tune Rover V8 Engine," clearly said, rightly so, that "reliability problems in Rover engines are due to variations in amount of aluminum surrounding the liners," and it should have taught all of us this, if we were paying attention, the 4.0 blocks, had somewhat thinner aluminum walls behind the cylinder liners (most code marked blue by Rover) than the 4.6 blocks had (code marked red by Rover, meaning the thickest walls behind liners). Also, the blue coded 4.0 blocks, following one or two overheating issues, cracked that aluminum behind the liners 80% of the time, freeing up liners to move, while the red coded 4.6 liter blocks, following two or more overheating issue, cracked behind liners only 15% of the time. So, you tell me, what is more "reliable?"

That's weird. Every horror story thread I've read with a slipped liner and a cracked block is mostly 4.6's. A 4.0 slipping a liner is rare on the forums.

Only the ones repeating old misinformation.

False information has a life of its own and lives long on the interweb forums.

It's a tough job but I got a tough truck.

The only valid reason to not buy an 03 is the lack of a CDL.

And even that isn't a reason if you don't plan leaving the mall parking lot.

The 4.6 is a bigger turd than the 4.0.

So I had it inspected.

The head gaskets were trashed.
Block was cracked and leaking.
Tune up hadn't been done in very long time.

The LR mechanic said I would have to invest about 2k to 3k to get it up to par.

I decided to decline, so the search is still on.

tell me I'm not reading this correctly, you are not saying you put over $8000 into a 98 Disco and it didn't include an engine?

"I got my '98 Disco about 9 months ago with 100k on the odometer with a run down of what the dealer did. For 8k and some change I have a Disco with new head gasket, wires and plugs, tires, and pretty much anything else you can think of that would go wrong"
