2003 Discovery SE cylinder not working
hi all...I'm new here:
Have a 2003 LR Discovery SE.......Service Engine Light Soon is on, and cylinder 5 does not work (missing). Fuel injector cleaner did nothing. Mechanically (pistons, etc)it is fine, it's just misfiring. Any thoughts/comments?
Also, am I wrong to not take it to the dealer for repair, and instead I'm choosing the local guy dowwn the street? Last time I did I spent $900 on about $200 worth of work.
This is the first real problem I've had with it. I love this vehicle: till now.
Thoughts or comments would be appreciated!

You need new spark plugs and wires. Happens to all Rovers. Not a big deal. And yes you can take it to the guy down the street, as long as he knows what he is doing and warrenties his work.
Also it helps if you also include your mileage with your post.

KL, Do you know what code you are throwing? How do you know the #5 cylinder is not firing? Posting the code will help the more knowledgable folks help you. If you don't have the code go down to Auto-Zone or the like and ask them to throw thier code reader on your truck.

I know the local mechanicgot a code for a misfire, and found it to be at #5. That's all I know. I do trust him a lot, though. It sounds like it is nothing major: myfingers are crossed. Thanks for the quick reply. I'm going to like this forum: should be a great help (and support group).

90% of all mis-fires on Rovers is due to worn out plugs and wires.
We recommend Magnacor plug wires. You can get them at www.roverconnection.com.
www.AtlanticBritish.com. Book mark both of those pages, good source for tech tips and parts.
Your guy shouldnt have a problem with you buying parts. I use Denso Iridium spark plugs, others recommend Bosch Fusion plugs.

It's pretty rare that the coil goes, I really doubt the coil is bad. That being said, if you're not doing it yourself the labour to do the coil costs more than the coil. If you're replacing it for peace of mind while everything already exposed and apart that's one thing but if it's being replaced because its assumed bad that's another. If the few hundred dollars for the coil is going to make any difference to you then you may want to revisit the coil replacement for now.

Get the exact code, ask what the shop wants to charge you for parts and labor, how many miles on your engine?
If you are going to get this repaired, you need to order a set of 8mm Magnacore plug wires, make sure the shop installs either Champion double platinum of Basch Platiunm Plus 4 plugs.
