Hello all. I'm a long time Jeep WJ owner looking for my next ride. My Jeep has been good to me for 180k miles, but things are starting to fall off and break down, and I'd like to step up to a nicer truck.

I've been looking around this forum for a buying guide, but haven't seen one. What I'm looking for is a guide to what to look for when buying a used 2004 Discovery. Common problems, failures, and the such.

Here's a discription of the vehicle in question:
2004 Discovery SE
4.6L V8
From a Dealership - "Certified" pre-owned (6 year 75,000 warranty)
$17,900

Salesman description > "It is a one owner with 46k miles. It has had a new engine which was put in by the previous owner. 5 passenger seating with chrome running boards and A-Frame brush bar with lights! "

My first concern is the engine. Why would a new engine be needed at 46,000 miles?

What other questions should I ask. Thanks.

You can find SE's in SoCal for 11k, so 17 is pretty high.

New engine on an 04, was likely the PO overheated it and ruined the factory engine.

 

I bought an 04 SE with 40K on it for the same price last October... The oil pump malfunctioned which caused my engine to need to be replaced. Luckily it is under the same extended warranty so it will be covered.

Yes you can find them for cheaper but for a certified pre-owned with extended warranty that is about the price you will pay.
