yeah I was aware of the 03s having issues but have read multiple threads in here and have come to the assumption that if an 04 has oil pump issues then its accidental. As far as the rest....I've read so much in here and I haven't found one issue with the 04. I've found several as thats all i have on the brain. Let me get on it and get this ball started. I actually like the plain S model. I love the simplicity. My wife has an X5 and theres toooooo much BS and I don't want wooden trim or any of tht stuff. All i need is the CDL and a CD player(optional but nice amenity)!

I do intend on installing greaseable ujoints on the drive shafts so don't worry guys!!!! My 95 has me well trained on greasing the drive shafts.

One quicky tho.......whats the deal with the head gaskets? I've read a lot of failing around 60k. I've read a lot of posts from okdiscoguy regarding preventative maintenance but should I just go ahead and replace them? I've looked on land rover website and there's not ONE ceritified pre-owned 04 disco in the entire US so no chances of extended warranty on the 04 i go with.

Discovery's have popped head gaskets at 60K since conception. It is not because of Dex-cool, it is the head design along with gasket material. They all are prone to replacing gaskets around that mileage, whatever coolant you run.

Yes and no, my '97 with 187,change has the original head gaskets, it had green coolant in it changed on a regular basis when I bought it.

https://landroverforums.com/forum/sh...ad.php?t=27657
Look at the pics, thats what happens to Dex-Cool when exposed to air.
You have to ask yourself, why does the throttle body heater leak on all DII's?
Why do all DII's blow head gaskets?

They use Dex-Cool because it is more enviromentally friendly than the green stuff.
Truth be told you can use any coolant you want as long as it is ALUMINUM SAFE, that is the key, aluminum safe.

If you use green (DI factory fill) LR says to change it every 30,000 miles or 24 months, DII factory fill (Dex-Cool) LR says to change it every 45,000 miles or 36 months.

Yes LR's are prone to head gasket faliurs, yes Dex-Cool is junk, no all head gaskets can not be blamed on Dex-Cool.

But ask yourself this, why does Land Rover say to change your 150,000 mile 5 year coolant every 45,000 miles or 3 years?
They must know something we dont huh?

There was a recent class action lawsuit against GM and dex-cool.

So can dex-cool be flushed out & replaced with green stuff safely?

Yes, BUT you must to a complete flush with clean water.
Once it all comes out clean then you can switch coolants.
I prefer Peak Global in the 50/50 pre mix, you can buy it straight and mix it yourself but you MUST use distilled water.
I like the premixed because then it comes with a warranty.

No matter the coolant you use change it every 2 years no matter the miles, it's cheap insurance.
