Default 2004 disco towing capcity

OK. I posted on here back in the Spring about getting my 2004 Discovery wired for towing my pop-up camper. Luis and Land Rovers Unlimited in Spirng, Texas did an awesome job. I need to post pics of the wonderful, clean work he did. We pulled our 3300lb pop-up with no problem but now we are wanting to move up to a bigger trailer. Luis wired the disco with a brake controller so my question is what is really going to be the capacity for towing. I know the manual says something like 7000 lbs in low gear ratio, but can i tow like that on the highway? What are your thoughts. You can email me if you like. We are going to look on Tuesday and I want to have a good idea before going to the rv dealer. Thanks for the advice!

George

No,
that will be a strain on the tranny and brakes, 5500#'s is what you can town on the road, with electric brakes.

qruehle, where did you get the 7-pin connector. Did you buy a factory one? Also, how hard was it to wire in the brake controller?

Disco can tow 3500 kg's, or 7700 lbs so I cannot see an issue tbh and always tow in high ratio.

urban, I think 7,700 is only in low range. High range towing capacity is 5,500#.

Nite train, it seems you are correct, BUT I have no idea why. The US land rover manual says Low range gears at 7700lbs, and for the life of me I cannot understand why ??????

In my owners book, there is absolutley no ref High or Low gears, the 7700lbs is what it will tow. The GTW is 14000 lbs or 6380 KG's

If you go here and check both the manuals for the US spec vehicle and European vehicle, you will see what im talking about

http://www.ownerinfo.landrover.com/e...prod/index.jsp

Even writing this message it still baffles me why it would be different over there..............towing in Low range is a stupid idea!!!

Your vehicles are the same as over here so I cannot see an issue tbh. It must be one of your funny laws, unless anyone knows the reason behind the differnece.

UP-Its because you drive on the wrong side of the road. The left side of the road can hold more weight.

I agree with UrbanPanzer, if the axles can handle 7k in low why not high? To play it safe though stick with a trailer around 5,ooo lbs, with fresh water, gear and family you will be pushing 6,500. Just tow in 3rd gear and keep the speed down.

They probably don't have enough power to pull 7,700 #s in high range and since you can only go about 25mph in low range stopping isn't that big an issue.

you all need to remember that the lady that was driving the RV , put it on cruise, and went into the back to relax was in the US. AND she won the lawsuit against the mfg because the rig didn't drive by itself on cruise control.....
