Default 2004 locking diff??

Hey guys

Just got this 04 SE7, love it, thought all 04s had the locking diff option, but can't seem to get the shifter over there?! Any ideas? Could just be an idiot! Thanks!

Could be rusty or corroded, does it have the Diff lock decal behind the shifter? Where it says move to neutral and push left?

Probably stiff/frozen from lack of use. Penetrating oil like PB Blaster or Kroil would help.

The transfer case shifters are notorious for freezing up. I've read that some come free with a couple of good wacks, but I just pulled one off a junked D1 that needed serious work to get it loose.

I have the exact same problem on my 2004. I can move the shifter over a little bit but I am afraid to lean into really hard. It does move a little but I dont see a light on the dash indicating that the diff is locked. I just changed front driveshaft and the transfer case fluid and everything seemed ok.

Any particular spot I should look at to hit with PB Blaster?

Yeah it has the diff lock emblem on the shifter head itself, and then on the plate in front of that it says diff lock, i can shift from h-n-l with no problem, but it just doesn't seem to want to go left at all...

Get under there and spray the whole linkage down with PB. Let it soak for a day, and try it then.

The handle should move a few inches to the left when locked. There's a 1/2" thick rod that moves left and right when you actuate the shifter, and corrosion binds the rod in its housing.

The gear lever on mine would have broken before it came free. I had to remove it from the truck, hose it with pb, pinch the square end of the 1/2" rod with a bigass cresent wrench and very gradually work it loose again.

If you aren't mechanical, this may be a bit tricky. The amount of force needed to get mine loose could easily have broken it if I went too mongo on it. I was as gentle as possible while still applying a lot of force. It's tricky.

You wouldnt happen to have any guide on how to remove? Or the steps you took? What I'm looking for under there.

Thanks!
