Question 255/85/R16 BFG on a D2 - anyone???

You may have already seen my post about tires and I have narrowed it down to the BFG MT's for sure. I have been stuck on what size between 285/75, 265/75, and 255/85 and have seen pictures of every tire size under the sun except the 255/85/16 on a D2. I have seen the on a FJ40 with a lot of backset so they stuck inside the wheel wells and looked very narrow.

Does anyone run 255/85/R16 BFG's on a D2? Pics?

Discovery Series II
  • 255/65-16: Stock tire size.
  • 255/70-16: Just a bit taller than stock.
  • 265/75-16: Taller and wider than stock, possible to fit without lift. minor rubbing. Looks real balanced with mild OME lift.
  • 285/75-16: even taller than 265/75-16, r requires a bit more lift than the regular OME lift. some have fitted OME751 from Discovery series I, and changed SLS sensor in the rear to achieve almost 3 inches. Gearing and shaft strenght become issues.
  • 255/85-16: a bit taller than 285/75-15 but narrower. Gearing and shaft strenght become issues.

I think the last one is a typo and is suppose to be -

255/85-16: a bit taller than 285/75-16 but narrower. Gearing and shaft strength become issues.

But I could be wrong.

I would just stick with 265/75-16.

Wow thanks 98roverguy.

I will have 3in of true lift and the rims are about 3/4in offset more than stock and I have Tom Woods shafts that I told him to build for my 3in lift - so I should be good with the 285/75/16 the right?

I am planning on lockers and gearing next spring so hope that i would be ok until then.

Thanks again-

It's a good thing to take the time to study and decide which model tire you want, but keep in mind that the size tire is just as, if not more important than the make.

Too many people get overly bitten by the lift bug and are then faced with filling the wheelwells with improper tire size in regards of driveline strenght and gearing.

Remember that a lift is meant to fit bigger tires! It is the tire size that determines the axle clearance. Well, it is true that it will also help in the approach and departure angles, but this can be fixed with changing bumpers for ''thinner ones''.

Before you reach the point of no return, it is wise to modify your Disco intelligently by adding stuff that actually makes your truck better and not better in some area, but a lot worse in others.

No one can deny the fact that for its size, Discos come stock with too small tires and are too low from the ground. A small 2 inch lift with 245/75r16 or 265/70r16 gives it the looks that it should have had in the first place, and that combo makes it better in the looks department and offroad while keeping a fonctional and travelable vehicle without having to worry about the driveline strenght, axle gearing and brakes performance.

Now, if you are willing to address the above mentioned and match the driveline strenght, axle gearing and brake size with your tire size choice, then the sky is almost the limit.

I really don't think 285s or 255s are going to fit Any OME lift. You're going to rub a lot offroad.

I know you are running similar steel wheels as the ones I am getting with a 4in backset and 285/75/R16. So my question is what kind of lift/suspension setup do you have? Do you have a picture I could see? (its hard to tell from your profile pic)

Thanks-

P.S. I will be running the 751 in front and 763 in the rear with N107/N108 shocks. I already have TW shafts and I told him I would be running 3in lift when he made them. CDL, lockers, gears, arms, and links come in the spring.

OME 779/762 springs, 1.5" spacers, 1.25" body lift. The front/rear bumpers give me some more room as well.

Thanks Pete.

So you are probably running more like 4-4.5in of lift and obviously you had to do a minimum of brake lines, abs extensions, and shafts. But you probably have done much more than that.

Sorry to change the subject but what bumpers are you running? The back one looks really clean, I like it...

Thanks again-

Greg davis in the rear and Equipe 4x4 in the front. I've heard of people running 285 on the OME 3" but.. I rubbed when I had the OME 779/762 with 1.25" body lift, so I added the 1.5" spacers. Doesn't rub anymore.

Also you have 7in rims with a 4in backspace and I will have 8in rims with a 4in backspace. So mine would probably rub even worse.

Thanks for all the help. I found some of your other posts on other LR forums and have learned alot from you.

I guess I will just go with the 265/75 like everyone else ):sadface here. I just wish they made it in 265/80/R16 that would be perfect.
