Default 3 amigos (bad wheel sensor now what?)

I had the abs light problem, i took it to a dealer they said it was a bad wheel sensor and for 950.00 they could fix it, my question is can i do it myself cheaper and if so will the abs light turn off once i have replaced the bad sensor?

Did they tell you what sensor? You can buy them for around $130 plus on line. Most of the time, if you can find a shop to turn off the lights, they will stay off.

Sure you can fix it your self, but unforunately the light will not automatically turn off nor can you use an ODBII scanner to turn it off. You will have to have someone with the correct tools to turn off the light.

Armlock
I just had my front sensor replaced last week by the used car dealer who sold me my 98 ( that was what we agreed on when I bought the rig). His mechanic got the part in around 3 in the afternoon and had it ready for me before 5pm. the ABS light is off (except when you first start the car) and my antilock doesn't lick in when it shouldn't anymore. So sounds like it shouldn't cost anywhere near what your dealer quoted. How do you find a good fair priced mechanic? that's another thread Good luck

Thanks in advance

As an alternative to the dealer you can try these Independant Rover mechanics, they have the specialized Rover TestBook diagnostic equipment to turn off your ABS light.Though it's still going to be a drive: http://www.rangerovers.net/service/south/ncarolina.html, http://www.rangerovers.net/service/south/tennessee.html

I would object to paying anything more than thier minimum 1hour rate for turning the light off. Probably only take a few minutes to do it but they gotta recoup thier investment in that very expensive test equipment.

When a repair is made, the light will still nee3d to be reset by a mechanic who has a lap top scanner capiable of clearing the codes.

Chances are it is not just a sensor, if you've got a D1 rebuilt your rear hubs, if you've got a D2 you'll need to pull the hubs to check for bearing play. The ABS design on these is horrendous, if the bearings wear at all the reluctor ring in the hub can shimmy, this causes spurious readings that freak out the computer.

A new D2 hub is $400, a new sensor about $130... so it really makes sense to check them. The one advantage of a new sensor is you get a full length cable now on them, but it makes it a bigger job to install since it's not just a plug anymore.
