Most like, and somthing that is very common, is the linkages locks up when not having been shifted on a regular basis. This can be a real pain in the *** to fix, whatever you do, don't force it or you will bend the linkage.
Send me your tele number and I'll call you with a couple of ideas.

The shifter that you are referring to is the CDL, center differential lock.
When that is locked a light will come on on the dash and equal power will go to the front and rear driveshafts.
Like Mike said the linkage will seize if not used once in awhile.
Once a month is a good rule of thumb.
Crawl under the truck and have a friend move the shifter and you can see it move, spray it really well with Liquid Wrench and move it, it may take several tries to get it to work.
And since this is your first Land Rover you know that you MUST use premium gas?

Engine replaced 2 years ago and has 80,000 highway on it. New tranny and clutch. Body is clean with no dents and shiny paint ( white) with one bumper ding in front and back. Poor guy got a pt cruiser and sold it to me for 350
