Default '97 Disco Remote Programming

I purchased a spare 2-button remote last year, and now need to program it. It came with instructions for a '94-'95 I believe, but I can't get them to work for my '97. Does anyone have the instructions for a '97? They are not found in the factory shop manual or the owners' manual and $140.00 for 3 minutes labor is simply obscene.

Thanks in advance for any help.

94-95 one button remotes can be done at home but the two button remotes on 96+ discos need to be taken to the dealer. i had a pair of remotes programmed for $50.

The only reason I can think of that would prevent me from programming my own remote would be a special tool available only to the dealer. They culd also limit acces to the programming info under the guise of security, but I don't buy that. Does anyone know the answer?

IF IT IS THE REMOTE THAT DOES NOT WORK ,HERE IS MY EXPERIENCE:
AFTER CHANGING THE BATTERY ON MINE,WHICH I BOUGHT AT RADIO SHACK,MY REMOTE WOULD NOT WORK.TO SINCRONIZE THE SIGNALS, WITH YOUR KEY CLOSE THE DRIVERS DOOR AND PRESS ONE BUTTON OF YOUR REMOTE THEN TURN THE KEY IN THEOPPOSITE POSITIONTO OPENAND PRESS THE OTHER BUTTON .TRY THE REMOTE .DO THIS A FEW TIMES UNTIL IT WORKS.THIS DID IT FOR ME.HOPE IT IS AS SIMPLE FOR YOU

Further research confirmed that for a '97 you need to go to the dealer, or find an independent shop with an Autologic diagnostic computer to program the remotes. Since the dealer quoted about the same as the independent I've used before, the dealer got my money. Contrary to information I had for '95 & '96 D1's, we were able to program 3 remotes for my '97 - this was a surprise to the dealer, and while we still don't know what the max. number is, we do know you can program at least 3. The dealer charged me the same one hour labor to program all three, so now I have a spare programmed and ready to go when my wife loses her keys again. I feel better now about spending $91.00 for the programming.

One thing I have learned from this experience is that losing your keys with all these remotes attached is one very expensive proposition. My wife had not only the Rover key and remote, but also remotes and keys for a BMW and a Toyota. Only by prowling Ebay and the net was I able to keep the cost of replacement of all keys and remotes down to about $400.00. Try as I might, she refuses to keep each vehicle on separate key rings like me. She prefers one huge key ring with everything on it. Ultimately, we compromised by adding a small tag to her keys which reads "if found please call...". See, I may not win the discussion, but I'm not without influence.
