99-02 to 03-04 Gauge Cluster Swap:

99-02 to 03-04 Gauge Cluster Swap:
Okay first off I'd like to say that I searched high and low about swapping an 03-04 D2 Gauge Cluster into an earlier 99-02 D2. Everyone said it could be done however you had to take a visit to the dealership in order for it to work properly. This is true if you don't modify the 03-04 Gauge Cluster and just install it, which will cause your Odometer to flash until it's programmed at the LR Dealership. At the same time you can do it without having to go to the LR Dealership if you have a good working unit currently in your 99-02 D2.
Here are the steps on how to install an 03-04 Gauge Cluster into your 99-02 D2 without making a trip to the LR Dealership.
1. On your replacement 03-04 Gauge Cluster start by unplugging the speaker on the back.
2. Remove the back white plastic cover which contains the speaker and sit it aside.
3. Now you should see the PCB of the 03-04 Gauge Cluster. Where each gauge is you'll see 3 screws on the outer fuel/temp gauges, and 4 on the tach/speedo gauges. Those screws are what hold the PCB to the rest of the Gauge Cluster.
4. Remove all the screws and sit them aside
5. Now you can gently lift the 03-04 PCB off the rest of the gauge cluster assembly. This is where your mileage is stored.
Funny thing on my 03-04 Gauge Cluster when I went to remove the PCB someone had shoved a piece of cotton in the Service Engine Soon poorly blocking it from illuminating the Service Engine Soon Light...........
6. Once the PCB is off the 03-04 Gauge Cluster you are ready to start working on your 99-02 Cluster.
7. Remove the Gauge Cluster Bezel (something that should take 5 minutes took me nearly 30min as the previous owner super glued the Gauge Cluster Bezel to the dash).
8. Unplug the two main wiring connectors to your Gauge Cluster
9. Remove the 4 screws securing the Gauge Cluster to the dash.
10. Now as with the 03-04 Gauge cluster remove the same white back cover, and the screws securing the PCB to the cluster.
11. Take care not to mix the PCB's up as you'll be in for a mess if that happens.
12. Install you 99-02 PCB onto the 03-04 Gauge Cluster (if you have a bad bulb now is a perfect time to change them!)
13. Install all the screws, reinstall the white back plate, and plug in the speaker.
14. Optional step, but on my donor 03-04 Gauge Cluster the clear plastic to view the gauges was scratched so I swapped that out at the same time by carefully pushing in on the locking tabs.
15. Install is the opposite of removal.
Now you've just saved yourself a trip to the dealership, and you've upgraded your 99-02 D2 Gauge Cluster to an 03-04 D2 Gauge Cluster. For those of you with 03-04 D2's you could do the opposite and install a 99-02 Gauge Cluster into your 03-04. Just depends on what you want to do, but the main thing is just keeping your original PCB and installing it onto the replacement Gauge Cluster.

No advantages besides looks, it's strictly cosmetic, but after owning 2 03's and an 04 I missed the 03-04 gauge cluster vs the cluster in my 02.
I searched and searched for info and all I found was it would flash until programmed and require a dealer visit. So I got my hands on an 03-04 cluster for about the price of a 12oz Red Bull so I figured I'd tear into it, and see exactly how it was put together. If I broke it I wouldn't really be out anything. The swap was very straight forward and simple. Hardest part for me was my gauge cluster bezel being glued to my dash!
