So has anyone here used AMSOIL in their Disco? They say you can go 15,000 to 25,000 miles or 1 year between oil changes. I'm thinking this is a good deal as I already use synthetic oil in my truck.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

No extended drains on these puppies. 7K at most on a D2, 5K on a D1. I did an oil analysis on my D1, and there was a high amount of hydrocarbons around 6500. I run nothing but Royal Purple and I still change at 4K. I wouldn't go over 5K, personally in a D2. That said, I run 10K drains in my CTS. Extended drains can be done, but you should monitor your vehicle through analysis for the first 5 changes. Readings are about $7 each, and you have to establish a baseline and know how to read them. Not really worth it on something you know isn't that tight anyway, IMHO.
Just stick with your favorite oil and change it often. Best thing you can do.

So what your saying is stick to my Mobile1 ritual.. I run it in all of my vehicles! Its been working thus far... "if it aint broke, don't fix it" type thing i'm guessing right?
I generally change the oil, 5k Mobile, NEVER let it go more than 3500-4000K without changing it, BUT i have been using the high end Fram filter.. I have read that this is not the best filter to use... I will be switching to a wix filter from NAPA, is that correct? Is there a better filter out there that I can be using?

I would not suggest running any oil that long, and even if you do, you STILL must change the filter out every 5.
I run WIX oil filters in mine. K&N makes a good one ( I ran the 3001 last change because they were on sale), and so does Mobile. I have heard the high end Fram's are ok to run, but I steer clear of the brand all together. Anyone that makes something in a cheap, poor quality version, I tend to stay away from.

I have been an Amsoil customer since 1977 and a dealer since 1985. I swear by their products as some of the best on the market. IMO one of the best oils on the market for our vehicles is their 15w40 (diesel & marine oil) I have run that oil in EVERYTHING I have owned in the last 20 years, and does great in the flat tappet application like our Rover engines. BUT I would NEVER advise anybody to go that long between oil changes......especially in an engine that seems to run rich like ours. In theory the only reason to go with an extended drain interval like that would be to save money....it's possible that the oil might be able to take it, but I'm not willing to take the chance, given that good clean oil (no matter what brand) beats old dirty oil any day......I personally wouldnt go more than 5000 miles between changes. And fwiw.....their old 15w40 oil is a better choice for us than their new (diesel) 15w40.

yeah, I agree, the new diesel oil lost all of the slickum. I would take CI-4+ over CJ-4 any day.
That said, Amsoil's new CJ4 is "guaranteed to last 3X longer, up to 50,000 miles or 1 year". We ran a rig 100K on RP with a bypass filter and regular filter changes, but it was monitored closely under oil analysis. I would never run my own stuff that long without checking it. Most people want to extend, but don't want to change the filter.
That said, Amsoil's new CJ4 is "guaranteed to last 3X longer, up to 50,000 miles or 1 year". We ran a rig 100K on RP with a bypass filter and regular filter changes, but it was monitored closely under oil analysis. I would never run my own stuff that long without checking it. Most people want to extend, but don't want to change the filter.

If you do try to extend the drains get a used oil analysis with TBN at around 6000 miles. I've never seen an extended drain UOA or anything past 5000 miles posted (and those looked perfectly fine and looked like they could still go another few thousand) so I'm not positive you could not go say 10,000 miles with a true long drain HDEO but you would need to sanity check with a UOA. I would recommend doing 5k to 7k drains with a good synthetic 5w40 like mobil 1 TDT or rotella T6. You won't get your money's worth with amsoil unless you do at least 10k drains.

The engine blew up at 167,000 miles.
$12,000 later a brand new engine and now only diesel oil (15w-40) and 5,000 mile oil changes will be done/used.
I dont care what oil it is or the engine or the brand or how you drive etc. I would never go 25,000 miles on one oil change.
Your oil filter will be clogged well before you hit that many miles.
And not to mention that you will void that nice new warranty on the Traverse.
In my work van I used Mobil 1 0w-40.
