Default Any way to lock down a cargo rack?

I'm planning on purchasing a cargo roof rack in the near future. I'd like to ensure my investment is secure. Does anyone know if there is any way to lock the rack down to the gutters? Thx, and happy hoggin!

Probably the easiest would be tamper proof screws/bolts.

What rack are you getting? You might talk with whatever company makes the rack you like and see what they offer, but in general, no one makes any locks and for the most part, I don't know of anyone who has had their rack stolen.

Here's how my rack is secured:

The bolts and screws it came with are tamper proof and it would be quite a challenge to steal it. I have only heard of things getting stolen off the rack, never the rack itself being stolen. Like Mike said, there might be something out there that locks it on, but I wouldnt be to worried about it.

I know of at least two people who've had their Safety Devices rack stolen. I know one was able to recover it, can't remember about the other.

I had a SD rack on a Disco for years without any incidents. I'd think thaty if someone was prepared to steal your roof rack they are not going to be put off by "tamper-proof" bolts.

i'm paranoid, too, and would no doubt do my best to lock down a $1000 rack.

I'm planning on getting the voyager half rack(http://www.roverracks.com/DIIVR.htm). It sells for $600. I assume some of you have not lived around the DC metropolitan area but its not uncommon to see cars sitting on cinder blocks anywhere from here to DC. I was wondering if hardware stores sold bolts that have some sort of locking mechanism....maybe I'm just being ambitious. Thx for the info!

Considering that if you use the correct ones they'd need a grinder to get them off, tamper proof bolts would be a pretty good deterrent.

You're unlikely to find tamper proof bolts at a hardware store. Industrial supply would be your best bet.

Have to say this was the first thing I did with mine. SD racks are so rare in the UK, that they do get stolen, and after waiting 18mths to get one, I was going to stop any F****r nicking mine!!!

Heres what I used.........Tamper proof centres, case hardened so very very hard drill, dome headed as well so you cannot grip them with pliers, and they have a special key shaped tool registered to me and will only fit my batch of bolts.. Cost me a fair wack for just some bolts, but DEF worth it imo, and the look better as well than normal hex heads IMO....
