I have been planning a rebuild on my drive lines for some time now, but have not been in any rush really. So I have spent a good bit of time scouring the web for the best deal I could get on the quality parts recommended by the members here. I got (4) Precision 344 U-joints, 1 Precision 617 Centering Ball Kit, and a RotoFlex rubber flex coupling for $150 bucks shipping included from RockAuto. Here is a copy and paste of my ticket.

The U-Joints have "USA" forged on them, I'm guessing that Moog and Precision are in bed together nowadays. The Rotoflex is made by a company called URO PARTS. So most of this is made in the USA. Notice the "Discount" for $6.50? A quick search of the internet for RockAuto promo codes will reveal several 5% off codes. The one that I just now used is MMAR3113 and I'm assuming it's for March of 2013. Just apply the code in the "How did you hear about us?" box and hit enter durring check out.

This is enough parts to rebuild both the front and rear drive shafts completly except for new Nylock nuts which I'm gonna pick up at my local ACE Hardware for a couple bucks. I decided to go this route because the cheapest fully servicable replacement front driveshaft I could find was $300 and that still left the rear driveshaft untouched. Everywhere else I looked the u-joints were around $25 each, the Centering ball was around $50 and the RotoFlex was 80-110 bucks. Just thought I would pass along some maybe useful info to my Rover Brothers!

 

Nice info I'll be beating up my credit card a bit more with this one lol. But might I recommend not using any old nuts from the lumber store I would recommend grade 2, 5, or my choice grade 8 hard wear

Good point! I didn't know there are different grades. I'll buy the best available grade, it can't be but a few dollars more. I figure ACE's will be better grade than some of the internet. I'm also considering changing the flang bolts if I can get me hands on some nice ones for a reasonable price.

 

I cant remember if the flange bolts are pressed in or not, the cost of high grade hard wear is pretty cheap around 3$ for a nut and bolt.

 

I got my u-joints (MOOG 344 $17.48 ea) and centering bearing (Neapco 7-0081NG $20.43) from were cheaper from Advance Auto using a coupon code & free shipping. I remember looking at Rockauto, but the shipping killed the deal

I didn't realize that my gaiter was split until the day I did the rebuild. I ordered one form Rovahfam for $12.95 (I still need to install it)

I couldn't find the Rotoflex at Advance Auto and it let me add the U-joints to my cart, but at check out it said that there was none in stock. Had they had those items I would've bought from them. The shipping was free if you spent over $75. The 20% off coupon code was nice too. I just wanted to get it all from the same place incase something went wrong I would only have to deal with one seller. I guess you could save a few dollars if you wanted to order from different sellers. I dont like headaches though. haha

 

I like the Neapco 1-0005 from Advance better than the precision 344. The zerk is in the end cap and they are cheaper.
I ditched my rotoflex right after I bought my Disco in '01, but I haven't read anything positive about URO Parts, other than being cheap.

I agree. I've rebuilt dozens of driveshafts with the Neapco 1-0005 without a single complaint or issue. They're made in the USA, are a ridiculous bargain at Advance and are usually sitting on the shelves at my local store when I need them. On top of that, with the zerk on the end cap, servicing the u-joint couldn't be easier.

 

Rockauto carries MOOG/PRECISION Part # 617 not the Neapco part.
