Same question came up when researching parts for HG R&R. Read from several forums found doing a web search. Apparently there's a difference in hole/thread depth between the old/new blocks. Updated kit apparently has the correct longer length fasteners and the one recommended by ARP for the application. Reasonably priced with 20% off coupon, ARP 157-4301 Head Studs w/12-Point Nuts | Autoplicity and/or Lucky8 prices good too.
Most of same threads debate whether it's worth the extra cost when older kits seldom pull the threads out of the aluminum block if lower than recommended torque used. ...... |

What in the world is the difference between the 124-4003 & 157-4301 kit? I just want to make sure I just don't save $100.00 on the studs and then cause my head gaskets to go out prematurely. Any info or input would be greatly appreciated. |
I believe it was Zack from Rover North and the guys from Lucky that measure up the two sets not finding any difference in the post I read. But I've wrong before

It is the length of the studs. The 4301 are made for our engines. You risk pulling the threads out of the block. Use a thread cleaner, not a tap, before hand.

I read somewhere in my search, the studs did not come high enough. But like you, I have been wrong before also.

Just did a search, and on pirate4x4 forum, the consensus was there were more threads on the block end for less chance of destroying the block threads. Some members pulled the block threads and had to heli-coil. Cheapest I found them was 179.00. I will go with these when the hg have to be replaced.

Okay I have found the 4301's for under 200.00 so that's fine with me. I just want to do the best head gasket job possible. My friend that's going to help me do the head gaskets says to just use the normal LR bolts, but I want the best results.
