Default AutoZone scanner

Ok, as many of you know AutoZone will read your check engine light for free.
Per new company policy they cannot reset your check engine light.
But they do have a OBDII scanner that you can rent with their loan a tool program.
If you dont know how this program works you put a deposit on the tool that you want to borrow, take the tool home and when you return it you get your money back.
The deposit is usually the cost of the tool, so if you steal it you bought it.
It is $150 plus tax, so just figure $160 and yes, you can use your rewards card and earn points.
I drove to AutoZone, plopped down $160 cash, walked out to the parking lot, reset the check engine light, and 5 mins later I had my money back.
If you use cash you will get the money back straight away, if you use your credit card then the money will come out of your account and then you will have to wait upto 10 days to get the money back.
So I recommend using cash.
You can buy a cheaply pricedOBDII scanner from almost anywhere if you want to go that route.
But if you are like me your check engine light only comes on maybe once a year so it is hard to justify the purchase of a scanner.

Good plan Spike, I used to could go and they would turn their head and let me clear any codes as long as I was the one clearing them, but the last time my check engine light came on they wouldn't do it, so that is good to know.

One of my friends sons worked at AutoZone and he would reset it for me, but he is now in the AirForce.
I hope to get a ScanGauge for Christmas this year, those things are pretty cool.
You can watch everything is real time, including engine load % and instant MPG.

Or, you could just have them read the code, and then disconnect and reconnect the battery. That's what I've been doing, cuz Advance won't clear codes anymore either. Stupid emissions laws.

That does not always work.
I left my battery unplugged for over 3 hours while I ran across town to get a new alternator and when I hooked it all back up...light still on.

Every time you do this, the ECU has to re-learn your driving style and you get crap MPG. Plus you are asking for an airbag fault. Low voltage situations trip them easily (a code, not bag deployment)

Get a scanner from harbor freight for $29. It will read an clear codes. That is all you need...
