Default Back on the road.

So last week my DI went down due to a noise from the rear axle.
I drained the diff, removed the calipers...bad wheel bearings.
Ordered the parts from Atlanticbritish on Thursday night, they shipped Fri I delivered them to my shop today.
The drives side race was welded to the axle, once he got the bearing, what was left of it anyway, off the axle he was able to smooth it back out and then reinstall the new bearing.
I had him do both sides as things like bearings, brakes and tires all need to be done in pairs.
So parts with shipping were $130, labor was $140, Disco back on the road...priceless.
I knew it was bad but did not realize how bad.

Good thing you took care of it before it got any worse. $140 in labor is not bad at all. I would have thought it would be more than that for that kind of work.

The race welded itself to axle from the heat the failed bearing produced??

Funny if that was me, It would have been apart in my driveway when that was Discovered and I would have spend 3 days beating on it.. Wishing I woud have taken it to the Mechanic instead..

I knew it was bad, and that is exactly why I had it done.
He did my front bearings 2 years ago and it was only $60, but they were not welded to the axle.
Yes the bearing got so hot it welded to the axle, I have heard of that happening but never happened to me.
He said when he pulled the alxe out bearing pices just fell to the ground and all that was left was the race.

No, there is a oil seal.
The axle is assembled like this...hub, hub gasket, outer bearing, inner bearing, oil seal.

And just for everyones FYI, on a DI, RRC and NAS Defender if you have a blown diff, siezed axle bearings etc. you can remove the drive shaft and then the axles and still drive the truck.

A DI's axles look like this out of the truck.

A DII's look like this.

On a DII you would first have to remove the hub assembly before you could remove the axle shaft.
