Default Bad Fan Clutch?

I was sitting at BK drive thru and noticed my temp gauge climbing. Was sitting idling for about 5 min. So I shifted into neutral to see if I could hear the fan turning(air blowing). Nothing. as soon as i pulled away and started driving down the road, temp went back normal. If I'm correct, you should be able to tell when the fan clutch is engaged and when its not? Little backround- new t-stat and cooling system flush <6 months, no leaks, full coolant, radiator checked ok when flushed. Sound like the viscous coupling?

You should be able to here it kick in when your truck comes up to temp while idling also when you turn on your AC your front electric fan should turn on

In the morning when the truck is stone cold open the hood and then with the a/c off start the truck and listen for the clutch fan.
It will be loud and if you stick your hand under the hood you should be able to feel it moving enough air to fly a kite.
If not then you need a new fan clutch.
Advance Auto has one that will fit for $35.
AntiChrist knows the part number.

Yea, I can tell in the morning its turning, sounds like a mack-truck pulling out the driveway. But of course I'll have to let it cool to see if it still does it.

I dont know if this is a good test, but when I parked it hot, I could rotate the fan by hand easily with little resistance.

Are the couplers as easy to replace as it looks?

Sounds like your fan clutch is bad then, it should be very hard to turn by hand when hot.

The hardest part is removing the old clutch, then there are 4 allen head bolts that hold it onto the fan.
Replacement is reversal of removal.
I am sure he will pipe in soon but if he does not then send AntiChrist a PM and he will be glad to get you the part number for the fan clutch at Advance Auto.

See how much better it is if we all just work together?
Non of us know it all but we all know alittle.
Combine all that we know and we still dont know it all.
