I'm saying Land Rover specs GL4. GL5 was available when our Rovers were built.
GL5 has shockload additives that attack brass/bronze.
I don't know why Land Rover spec'd GL4 only, but my assumption is that the LT230 has some brass or bronze in it. I don't know for sure as I've never torn one down. I do know that the Series transfer cases and gearboxes have brass in them.
However, if there's none in the LT230, I see no reason not to use GL5. Would certainly make life simpler.

Yes, I've been using it for a number of years, as soon as I found out about the TSB. After the change shifting seemed more definite and smoother.
Be careful with Lucas. I couldn't find all the specs for it on Lucas's web site, but Land Rover specs MIL-L-2105, MIL-L-2105B, MIL-L-2105C or MIL-L-2105D for the transfer box, which are equivalent to various grades of GL4. GL5 has additives, including sulphur that will attack bronze/brass parts. Lucas says their gear oil has sulphur so I'm guessing it's GL5.
I don't know for a fact that the LT230 has any brass or bronze in it, but since they spec the GL4 grade I'm guessing it does.
The only GL4 I've been able to find any more is Sta-Lube made by CRC.
From what I've read on various automotive forums a lot of dealers use the wrong lube (no matter the car), probably because GL4 is so hard to find, and most people don't know the difference.
GL5 is definitely fine in the diff however.

Yeah GL 4 is going to be hard to find. I did a quick look around the other day in TSC and they didn't have any. I'm going to have to dedicate a day to driving around to find it. Quite possible the LT230 has bronze/brass bushings/bearings in it? I don't think it's design has changed much since the 60's or earlier? Looking at the manual for mine it still refers to the PTO cover plate? I'm wondering if I have a PTO under there and can power a brush hog etc LOL.

Which type of Redline MTL lubricant are you using in the R380? The ATF D4? I want to make the switch but I'm not sure which lubricant on Redline's page is the right one.
